ok first thanks goes to Hyper4mance2k for this very usefull post.

I'm in the middle of a budget race buld. I know , I know budget and race don't mix. But hell I've just got to get this thing going, and I figure I will replace with the right stuff alone the way as it breaks or money falls in my lap.

SO I'm going to copy some of his design. The collector is a close basic shape. But I'm going from a RB race header to a 2.5" to a 3" Pre muff then dump it before the axle.

I figure this will not be as loud as the Stock header and straight pipe it has now (it was a Spec7 car)
But I'm still not sure what pre muff to use. At first I was looking at the Dyna max. But after this thead, I'll be looking more. I had been looking at the Burns Stainless http://www.burnsstainless.com/3to35.aspx . But was wondering if anyone had tryed them? Also...ouch $$.

Agreed. +1 for posting this thread.

I've tried about as many exhaust combo's as you have, but, i'm not really going for power. Mainly looking for TQ., Throttle Response, and Tone most of all. Since my Rex is my DD.
So far the 'Best' setup i've found is my modified exhaust mani to straight pipe with resonator, then just any straight through muffler dumped before the rear axle.
That's not what i'm running now, but, it's what i've found to be best.

Good luck with finding whatever you're trying to find, i'm still looking.

I'm trying to find 200 whp on this engine before I go Bridge. LOL
My car is my daily driver as well. When I was living in WA I would put over 400 miles a week on her.

I'd be Bullshiting if I called my 12A a street port even a big street port. LOL.
But, I'm running a Nikki. So I'm sure we're making around the same power. Although I'm sure you have a muchh lower gear in your car then I, including lower trans ratios. That would Make up for some power

Also, have you thought about running a MFR Lava Rock Muffler? Works Great on my race car.
You could use it as a resonator, although it is considered a muffler, then fill another glasspack style muffler with lava rock material as a rear muffler, I'm not sure what size you'd want to use on all, but I'd think I'd want to go as big as possible, since your porting isn't substantial you're not too concerned about low end torque.

You really think you're making 190whp with a smaller streetport and a nikki carburetor?

I *think* he's refered to his port as a monster port in the past so he's refering to it being bigger then a big steetport. I remeber bc in another thread someone refered to the nikki not being able to keep up...??? with a stock fuel pump...?? Who knows..? I don't discredit anything I read here except when it's just hearsay, but he seems to be driving it as his DD.

Well this car will be a track only car. So I'm not running a muffler, just resonator and that's only so I can stand it in the pits. It's a stock port motor with a 48 weber. So I think this will be enough.

Right now it's got a stock header and straight 2.5" pipe.
Yes it's ear bleeding happeness at it's best.

Never used there mufflers, but they're tubing is of highest quality, also, I know a guy who runs E-Prod and has a burns stainless muffler, sounds awesome.
But not quite like a MFR lava rock muffler.

Use to run it with a weber. Recently went to nikki.

The trick to making more than ~170 crank HP with a Nikki is in the intake manifold... even then I have serious doubts about flowing enough air for 240 crank horsepower. The manifold is going to suck for those power levels no matter what you do, it's shaped all wrong.

Now, a Nikki on a modified Holley manifold... maybe. If all ducks are in a row.

so do you think a better flowing manifold will do the trick. i am in the beginning stages of building a nikki intake. i will be using 11/2 inch pipe...has anyone made one before..?

DD, yes,
Monster Port.. Yes..
Stock Pump + Weber.. Yes, did it for 4 years and am now running that same pump with my nikki. It sees 8500rpm frequently.
But whatever.. Nobody has to believe me. And everyone can laugh about my Nikki fed Monster Port all they want..

So, since this is an exhaust thread, has anyone tried auger style mufflers? I've given it a lot of thought, thinking about trying it.

BTW, RB claims you can make 240+ HP with a nikki on a Bridgy, and then says you can only make 235 with a weber on a bridgy. Says that in my 87' parts catalog.

Now, we all know you can make more then that with a bridgy, but, that's what it says.. I know it's outdated too BTW.
Doesn't say anything about manifolds.

Crispin38, I believed you. I did say: "I don't discredit anything unless it's just hearsay, but you seem to be driving it as your DD"

This topic stuck in my mind b/c even tho I've been told to ditch my nikki by many people and throw on one of my other carb set-ups that are just taking up space on my shelf (holley, dellorto, mikuni)... I've always opted not to. I am NOT going to change out my nikki carb until I fully understand it completly inside and out and even then I will prob still keep it... especially since it's kept up fine on my 13B and runs like a champ. I would like to see exactly how far it can go... streetport, bridgeport, nitrous, more nitrous, alot more nitrous. Besides, I love the stock look when I pop the hood. Lately $$$$ has been somewhat tight so turning these daydreams into reality has been a bit slow coming.

RX71king... we can test your manifold on my car if you'd like whenever it's done.

But yes you are right, don't want to hijack this exhaust thread.

i have the stock 12A air cleaner on my PP, and its the FUNNIEST THING EVER. i can roll up with the BRAP BRAP idle, and pop the hood and people standing on the INTAKE side, with the stock FILLED intake ports just hanging out there, and the question i get is

"is the engine stock?"

so i'm going to start answering yes, yes it is

I will look into the MFR, and thanks. I know Burns puts out a great product.

Here is some more pic of my exhaust build.

In a recent Grassroots motorsports, they had the Burns mufflers listed as using fiberglass packing. It kinda also said they had full stainless mufflers availiable so I'm not sure if they will hold up well to rotaries.

I've got it sitting here and haven't had time to read it. But I'll check it out.
Burns has two types of packing. Glass and/or Stainless scrubble(looks like steel wool) and has a floating core. So it should hold up. I think...lol
But thanks for the GR's info......going to read it now
