Racing beat exhaust backfiring
i just hooked up my exhaust and when i rev it up and then let go of the gas it backfires a bit and i was wondering if it should be doing that or it will stop after a while or i did something wrong?? Also today I tested to see what they sound like and after the car was warm there was a smoke rising up near the muffler, I dont think there was an exhaust leak because the smoke didnt smell anything like exhaust, Maybe there was plastic or tape on the muffler or somethin I dont know, but there was a **** load of smoke?

It was probably tape or packing peanuts, mine did that same thing! It was a used system with about 3k miles on it. And boy did i burn them peanuts off!!! lol Look like a smoke bomb was under my car! Oh well!

well thats what i think just get her warmed up and all that. If shes still backfiring get new wires and still after that look at distributor and still after that get the timing perfected at a mazda rotary mechanic.

Well, the mixture screws on the carb are only for idle mixture so I don't believe that they are the issue. Check your timing, and make sure that all of the blockoff plates are sealed up tight so there are no vacuum leaks. I have the same RB system, and have never had an issue with backfiring with either of my carbs (stock and Sterling).

damnit, IM NOT JESUS, i just no how to hook up an exhaust. Dont know how to check timing or whatever block off plates, I know it didnt do this untill i changed my exhaust...Are you supposed to put the air pump back on after puting the racing beat header on or leave it off??? maybe the problem?

Did you receive instructions and blockoff plates with your exhaust system? There should have been (I believe 2) blockoff plates included. The air pump is removed, and one of the plates will cover that hole. There is also a valve on the side of the intake which comes off, and that is the location of the other plate.
I believe that's right, been over a year since I did mine.

A Humboldt kid, eh?
You should come out to the summer Solo II competitions here in Stoon. Check us out at www.ssccracing.org. It'd be good to see another RX-7 out there.

Are you actually "backfiring" thru the intake,,,,or is it your exhaust. If it is exhaust look for a leak. It will allow air (oxygen) to enter the system and ignite the unburned gas.

Also, if your car isn't in tune (running rich for example) then the fact that you have no catalytic converters means the raw unburned gas collects in your exhaust.
When you're at high rpms and you let off the throttle, you get more gas than air, and boom, a backfire.
That's why the stock car has 2 anti-afterburn valves, a shutter valve, and adjustments for mixture that compensate for all sorts of things. The stock one also has cats and an air pump.
Tune your carb, check your timing, and don't let your throttle slam shut from high rpms (good drivers shouldn't *need* to do that often anyway). You should be good.

My car is ugly as sin, since I'm pretty broke and spend whatever money on it in go-fast/handle-better parts. Anyhoo, here's an 'action' shot from Solo II
Distance and blurring make it look not rusty. It's an illusion.
Anyhoo, you should definately come out, if only to see the events.
