Again, I say that I'm sorry to bother anyone with stupid questions. I found a donor parts car in a local junkyard, no motor or tranny but the rear end is still intact. It's badged a GSL and has rear discs. Is it a safe bet that it's gonna be a LSD rear end? Also, recently filled my gas tank and discovered a leak in the upper portion of the tank. I found replacement tanks on mazda trix but they're just under 900$, no joke. Has anyone found a good way to fix up a gas tank on these things? Or should I just junk yard dive?

if the car is on jacks and the wheels can be spun, try the following:

-release the e-brake
-if it is a manual transmission, put the gear into neutral
-spin the propeller shaft and see if both wheels spin the same direction
-spin one of the wheels, while checking the other wheel. If they roll the same direction, you have an LSD in your hands.

I recently changed mine over, and it is so much more fun and safer (more control on hard corners).

You might want to look into a fuel cell if the OEM tank is that much more.

 

If it truly is a GSL, then it has an LSD, the condition of said LSD is another story. Since it has the rear discs, than there should be no question of it's GSL authenticity.

Will spinning the propeller shaft tell me if the LSD is still functioning? My problem is that I have no motor or tranny in the donor car.

Logan, depending on the size of the leak holes in your tank you may be able to fix the leak with J-B weld. The stuff is two part & bonds really well to almost anything. Do a google search & read up on the stuff. Many auto parts stores have the stuff. Of course if you tank is full of rust inside your fighting a loosing battle & it ain't worth fixing.

 

You can find tank reconditionersin most cities. For less than $200 they will boil it out, get rid of the rust, coat the inside with a plastic material and coat the outside with tough stuff to protect it in the future. These coatings will fill any little pin holes and they will fix whatever they don't think will plug up before they coat it.

 

Try your local radiator repair shop, some of them do fuel tank cleaning/repairs too. If you're in a DIY mood, Eastwoods sells tank cleaning and repair kits. It may be best to have the tank boiled out by a rad shop before hand.

Guys, this gave me a clue the author is not interested in spending a bunch of $$$. Any issue may be solved by throwing $$$ at it.

 

JB weld should fix it. but if its rusted you might want to get it reconditioned

 

It is possible that the leak is from a fuel line rather than the tank itself.
Remove the tank and inspect for leaks and replace all the rubber hoses at the tank.
If the metal is rusted out it will get expensive to get it repaired and lined.

 

I'm not a First gen guy..But I know that the Sec gens have a "trap door" on the floor of the rear Compartment to get at the Fuel Tank,and it's Pump,so on..Maybe you can see the leak if you can access this part of the vehicle?..(hope it is correct info)..Good Luck to you.

 

I recently had a hopelessly clogged fuel pick up in the tank and was thinking about a new tank. Instead I took the old tank to a radiator shop and had the line replaced (braised in) the tank cleaned and sealed for $135.00. Beats $900 every time. I would take it to the shop before I looked at new.

 

My tank leaked at the fuel level sensor gasket. I went a year without filling over halfway before fixing it.

I used a wire brush to clean the rust off the rubber gasket (not a misprint) and grinded the rust off the flange before applying liberal amounts of gas proof liquid gasket.

I also re-tapped the holes (4mm x .070) and bought new screws.
