Sounds about the location of the o2 sensor (oxygen sensor). The o2 sensor threads into a hole in the pipe after the header (mine is racing beat, cant rem placement of stock mount) If thats what it is and your is disconnected I would think your gas milage and exhaust smell would be pretty bad.

this is a carb car, im sorry, i should have stated that. its not really an O2 sensor, it has no threads on it ,or the pipe. it has two philips head screws holding it to a flange, that is welded into the pipe. it looks like a thick wire sticking into the exhaust. if it is an O2 sensor it doesnt look like any ive ever seen before, lol.

The 84/85 cars that are carbed have a thermoswitch in the exhaust. It is part of the emissions system. I believe it has to do with the air injection into the cat. The manual says it is a temperature switch that switches at 1418 F on manual cars, 1364 F for autos. The GSL-SEs don't have it. They just have an O2 sensor in the exhaust manifold. I would just leave it in place. Why do you what to remove it? Are you replacing the exhaust? If you don't need to deal with emissions, you probably could remove it.

yeah, thinking about changing to aftermarket exhaust, no emmissions in BFE Iowa, lol. also what would cause my exhast manifold to glow red when the choke is on for it to warm up?? it only does this when choke is pulled and the car is sitting to warm up, at like 1500-2k rpms during warm up.
