!QUESTIONS! Starting the 12a after 8 Years!
I just got a hold od and 81 rx, it has 100,000 miles on it, the car has been sitting for almost 8 years. the previous orignal owner let it sit do to a transmission failure and never got it fixed.
i plan to find another tranny and install.
my QUESTION is what preporations do i need to do in order to get this thing into running condition.
what are the tricks to gettin her up and smokin. lol
pm me or leave me a post.
thanks

smokin is exactly what it will do at first. ok tho.
my current turbo motor sat for 10 YEARS aahahahh I LOVE THESE BASTARDS!
anyways, ofcourse drain the oil, might want to pull the carb off and clean it up a bit, grease the linkages, drain the coolant, flush it, fill up. replace spark plugs, and other ignition pieces as needed, just your basic tune up bro. then put alittle oil down the carb barrells before firing it up. turn the key on make sure the fuel is getting to the carb and look in the window sights to see where they are sitting. pump the gas a few times and turn it over. see how it reacts. should fire right up, if not get back on here.

drain the gas tank completely, and put about 5 gallons of premium with 2 stroke oil mixed 100:1. the OMP and its lines are dry, so you want to use premix on the initial fireup.
also it wouldn't hurt to drop a couple of CC's of ATF through the spark plug holes, rotate, and put aobut 3 cc's on each apex seal. this helps initial compression, and will also help break the carbon loose to prevent carbon lock.
cheers.

alright thanks
i'll give it a try. i know the engine should be good i spun it and it wasn't locked up.
is it common to see 1st gens sitting and then being started after so many years.
to me 8yrs. seems to be to many for an engine to be in running condition still with a just a few tweaks.
but hey, whatever works.
again thanks. and i'll let you boys know the out come in a day or so.

worst that could happen is rust on the side plates, this will make the side seals wear pretty badly at first.
next worse is carbon lock, but if yours spins then it is currently ok. I would still research the archives concerning it though casue it tends to happen after a car has sat for a while.

Mine sat for 10 years, carb needed a full rebuild, dried out seals and gaskets.
I recommend after draining the tank and putting fresh fuel into it, pumping the fresh gas through the lines, disconnect the fuel line to the carb first, (the one with the aluminum piece in it is the return line), to drain the old crap out, then reattach the fuel line and replace the fuel filter at this stage.
Also dont change plugs until you've burnt off the ATF or MMO as it will foul the plugs, when you first start it the will be clouds of white smoke as this lubricant gets run through the system, once she runs clean change them out.
Check your Radiator carefully, I found mine was completely rotted at the bottom, there were no fins left at all.

All statments true above. Consider that just because it spins freely doesnt meen it will run well. You can have stuck apex seals in which case can be hard to unseat because you cannot build compression for the engine to run allowing them to unseat or forcing them to unseat. I would suggest to remove the exhaust manifold and inspect the apex seals if you cannot get the motor to start.

that's why i mentioned pouring oil down the carb. it will build compression and once cranked hopefully release anystuck seals. someone else said squirting atf... that can work too.
