Questions about por15 gas tank restoration kit
Ok, I went to start doing this on the gas tank for my 83 gs project, but I am unsure on a few things. I removed the sending unit like it says and looked in there. There is a screen filter on the inlet tube, but I see no way to remove it. I would think the sealing agent would clog this as well as the tubes. Is there a way to remove it? If not what should I do? TIA

Sean,
I just finished doing the tank on my 85 GS using the POR 15 kit. I got my advice from inittab, but here is what I would suggest. You want to remove EVERYTHING from the tank before you coat it. That silver tank coating that you line your tank with sets up HARD! It is like cement once it sets up, but it doesn't really expand. I strange product, I will admit. I've never really seen anything like it.
Anyway, remove all three of your fuel lines on the tank, the same way that you removed the sending unit. I believe the cap that has the fuel lines is removed with 6 screws? Can't quite remember. Anyway, you can't get that filter screen off of the supply line without removing this cap. This way when you put it back on it never comes off inside the tank. Otherwise, as soon as you put it back together it would come off and be rattling around inside the tank.... see? You'll also want to remove the filler neck hoses, and the drain plug. Tape off everything really well with duct tape. I would also recommend letting the marine clean procedure sit overnight in the tank. It will really eat the rust away if you give it enough time, and leave you with a nice clean surface.
The screws that held my top gas tank cap on were extremely rusty, and some of them even broke off. I would recommend soaking them in PB blaster, or a similar penetrating oil. Then try and take them off after they've soaked for a while.
Some of my screws broke off, so to compensate I got some kind of fuel safe sealer at autozone and covered the gasket in it upon reassembly.
Good luck!

Thanks for the info jamie, but 81-83 is different than 84/85, I just confirmed this on mazdatrix's site. The tubes aren't removable on my tank, which makes me wonder how the hell they got the screen thing in there to begin with. Maybe they put it on before welding the two tank halves together, whatever...
I was doing this as a preventative measure, since the car is all apart, perfect time to do it, but the tank isn't bad at all, so I guess i'll just leave it, i can't see how I could do it without clogging everything up.
Jimmy, are you putting the cell where the stock tank goes or in the hatch area somehow? Any pics would be good.
Any other suggestions would be good, thanks guys
