questions about my 1st gen

got a 61k mi. 81 rx7 gsl, i'm putting it back together after getting from a guy that had it sitting in a garage for 10 yrs. car has no exhaust and i have a stock clutch in the box waiting to go in when i get time. the clutch that is currently in the car is completely gone (dont ask me how in 60k). i actually got the car to move and for some reason the car barely runs and sputters untill i get to about 5-6k. at this point the car is off like a F****** rocket. hoping to get some kind of input on this.

IMHO, i'm thinking that w/ no exhaust and bad clutch combination the backpressure is not enough for low end torque and the clutch just slips untill 5k rpm...

Any input would be greatly appreciated...

I dont know why your car is dyeing bu i can tell you almost 100% that it is not because of the exhaust.

check the fuel system! if the car has been sitting for a long time, it would probably be wise to go ahead and clean out the tank. change the fuel filter, and check the pump as well. it is a common problem on these cars. but this doesn't really seem like it is exactly your problem, since you have high end power.
i would also check to see if the cats are clogged, and go ahead and change the basics (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, etc.) if you haven't done so already.
i don't think that it would be your clutch, cuz if it is really worn, as mine is right now, it will slip more with WOT... but i could be wrong
goodluck

change the fuel/air/oil filter, get it a new dizzy cap, new wires, spark plugs. Get some gum out carb clearner and give the carb a spray, check the timing. Basically just give it a turn up.

Sounds like carburator problems to me. Sitting for 10 years can't at all be good for the carb. You can try cleaning it with spray or even running a gum-out through the gas but personally I'll bet it needs a good old-fashioned rebuild. If you're shy about doing this yourself just PM Sterling or RX7Carl they can do it for ya. Good luck!

It's not brain surgery but it's a little detailed.
