Questions for the 1st gen Carb gurus.

Hello 1st gen lovers, this is my first post in this section so take it easy on me.

I have a 1989 S5 Vert, I was previously running an S4 JDM 13BT with a Haltech E6K. To cut to the chase, I ended up having to sell alot of the parts and transplanted others to my 87 TII.

I need to get this car up and running so I can sell it. I was thinking that carbing it may be more cost efficient.

So my question what would be the most cost effective way of doing this?

The car currently has a S4 13BT motor that I plan to run N/A.

This is what I have learned from the archives:

I could buy an upper intake manifold adaptor from the rotary shack that will allow me to use my stock LIM and mount a weber set up. I don't know the cost of this part since I am waiting for them to get back to me.

The motor is stock ported so I am unclear on what size carb to use?

Ignition will be via 1st gen distributor.

I am currently running a Walbro 255 in-tank pump, would a carb FPR be able to handle that flow? OR would I have to down grade the pump?

Exhaust will be custom using the RB/Mazdatrix do it yourself manifold kits.

I am on the right track or out to lunch? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

People usually use a weber 45 on a stock port 12a, and a 48 on a streetport 12a. So for a stock port 13b I'd go with a 48. If I were you I would try to find a used carb, the new webers are expensive.

Well I have some answers from Rotary Shack still waiting for prices.

Robert recommends weber 48 carb.

I will have to use the Mallory #4309 return style FPR with my Walbro pump.

I agree that I should look for a used carb. My goal is to spend no more than $1000 to get the car back on the road.

Well here is a breakdown of costs, all new parts except where specified.

1st gen distibutor (used) - free
mallory# 4309 FPR - $74
Pierce manifold and 48 IDA set up - $900 or
Rotary Shack upper manifold and 48 side draft set up - $900
Exhaust manifold kit from RB - $100
Random Fuel lines, wiring, etc - $200
My labour - free

So for roughly $1300 I can get this car going with a very nice look, sound and feel.

That is about the price of a standalone efi without tuning. Very difficult choice but I am leaning towards the carb set up since I am not able to tune efi and it would be quite unique. Here is a pic of the car.

Will include jetting from Rotary Shack and a few other extras not included in the Pierce set up. If I go this route I will definately go with Robert.

I don't think it's really an automobile. It looks like a really nicely done model, or possibly a die cast, set up to look real.

Note cars in the background are blurry, fence blurry, ground blurry right up to the point that the ground contacts the tires which are sharply focused. Some photo doctoring has occured here.

I don't know whether to take that as an insult or a compliment? I blurred out the background since the plate number on the Audi was visible. Here is a link to my for sale thread. Maybe you should buy it and then you'll believe it is real when you walk into it on your driveway.

Yeah guys the car is real, I've seen it in person, very nice.

Sean there is a place in the GTA that sells brand new Webbers for $500 Can, not sure if that is any cheaper or not, just thought I'd mention it.

Also, the Webber carb manufacturing place overseas is shut down and the price of new carbs will skyrocket soon if they haven't already!!

Most cost effective? IMO a 12A intake with an adapter plate and a Nikki carb.

Not trying to insult your car. It is so clean in the picture it looks like a toy! If it's a real vehicle, you should take it as a compliment.
