A question for the turbo guys

Turbo guys, can you answer the following questions for me?

What year/engine 1st gen did you start out with?
What kind of 13B Turbo did you swap in?
What would you have done differently, as far as the type of motor goes?
What did it cost you?
What would you tell someone who's doing this kind of swap on a budget? (Besides "DON'T." )

84GS Although any 1st gen will take a turbo conversion, the SE would be better suited.Better brakes and weight doesnt matter much with a torquey turbo engine.

Stock S4,then stock S5.Now I have a TO4B hybrid S5 that pushes 14psi with no issues.

I would have had an engine built right away rather than hope the 80K wrecking yard S4 engine would survive. It lasted 3-4 months, then the water seals failed from previous overheating(why was the car in the wrecking yard anyways, duh). My current streetport S5 13BT has 15,000 miles and runs like a top.Mazdatrix "E" build engine with almost all new parts.

Initial S4 swap cost about 2000 bucks with me doing all the labor and getting everything cheap from the wrecking yard.I did replace ALL seals, gaskets and hoses, but the initial cost for the ENTIRE engine, trans and harness was only 250 bucks from a PICKnPULL.The only thing I had to have done outside was the exhaust system, fuel tank welding, and the driveline.Obviously, all the aftermarket power upgrades added to the conversion cost, but a bone stock 180+hp TII conversion is still plenty fast in a 1st gen and affordable for 2K.

It can be done on a budget, but you need some limited fabrication skills and you HAVE to understand the FC powerplant.GET A FACTORY MANUAL,read it,become fully aware of what each part of the engine system is and what it does.Try to exactly duplicate the TII systems, wiring, fuel delivery, smog controls. The engine will run its best if it doesnt know its not in an FC chassis. The FC ECU wont tolerate leaving components unhooked or non-functional.Dont cheap out.Replace all the seals and hoses while the engine is on a stand. You wont regret the extra cost,as most of that stuff is inaccessible once the engine is assembled.Take your time and study up.Its really not that hard to have a fully legal, complete TII conversion si long as you know what your doing.I took 3 months prepping before I dove into the actual install. It only took 2 weeks and it fired and ran perfectly on the first try.And that was the first time I had ever seen or worked on a TII,in my life!

BTW,the S4 conversion is mechanically simpler, but not as refined or powerful as the S5.The S5 conversion requires a bit more fabrication and the parts are harder to find and cost more. The best combination of power and simplicity is a S4 block with S5 intake manifolds,S5 exhaust manifold and turbo and a S4 computor running it.
