I need to buy a fuel pump for my 84 rx7 with a fuel injected 13b. On rock auto, they have 3 pumps that all look a little bit different. Which one should I get?

Any of those should work. I like Bosch myself, but is a lot more expensive than those 3 (also not currently stocked). If you want to stay in that price range, I would say Airtex as first choice, BeckArnley as the 2nd choice.

 

Beck arnley for the loose... As a last resort only.

 

I'm looking at the same info now, as well as a the pump from Black Dragon. Can anyone tell me which of these pumps use the OEM mount rather than being a universal pump? My GSL-SE pump just died, and I'm curious how your pump choice turned out.

 

I believe with any of these, you transfer the mount from your old pump to the new one. You also transfer over the banjo bolt/pulsation dampner/hardline assembly.

I would recommend the Bosch. It currently isn't in stock at rockauto, though. Might be able to find it in stock at another autoparts place. Currently at rockauto, there isn't that big of spread on price ($98 for Airtex, $111 for Delphi, $123 for Carter, $128 for Bosch)..welll there is also an ACDELCO listed for $35, but it is very different size/shape (universal) and I'm not 100% sure it really is for EFI. There are some decent pics of each of these at rockauto, so you can see the quality. The Bosch is all metal, some of the others are partially plastic.

Even the Bosch at $128 is cheap compared to what one from Mazda costs. Mazdatrix lists the SE pump at $319. I believe that any of those at rockauto (except maybe the ACDELCO) will accept the stock mount and bolt up like factory. It just depends on the quality that you want. If you are in a hurry, maybe you could search the 'net for the Bosch part # and maybe find a local autoparts store that could get it in stock sooner.

 

Okay, well what do y'all know about the Black Dragon pump? It's listed at $139 and I've gotten lots of BD stuff that came in a Mazda bag - curious if this would be the Mazda pump.

As far as waiting goes, I really can't, as the car's stranded at work and it's full of oil, gas, lug wrenches, beer, and spares from the previous weekend at Road Atlanta. I need to move it before the beer skunks.

 

Not sure on the BD one. I know they sell a mix of OEM stuff and aftermarket. I suspect that it is probably Bosch that they sell. The Mazda one (shown on Mazdatrix) includes the mounts, PD, hardline, etc. That stuff isn't shown in the BD drawing. I took a quick look online.

Autozone has the Airtex for like $104
partsamerica (Advance, Checker, Krager, etc.) has the following:
- Master $105
- Bosch $104
- Beck/Arnley $159
- Carter $126
- Python $157

Python has a $45 core..the others have no core charge. The Master, Bosch, Carter, and Python ship in 1 day. Beck/Arnley ships in 2 days.

I would call up your local Advance/Checker/Kragen/Shucks and see about the Bosch. Many times, Advance Auto can get it in next day (usually morning) if it is something at the local warehouse. That is a good price on the Bosch. It has a LTD Lifetime replacement warrenty. The others only have a 1 year warrenty.

 

I called Black Dragon, and they confirmed that their catalog pump is not MAZDA OEM, but rather a reman pump from overseas. I ended up ordering the Bosch from Advance for the same $104 quoted on partsamerica.com. I didn't have to ask for a price match, or anything.

FYI, Advance doesn't list the pump as one of the replacements, but you can order the Bosch pump cheap if you ask for it by part number.

Cool deal. Good to know about the BD unit. Yeah..Advance, Checker, Kragen, etc. should have the same in store price as what is shown on partsamerica (normally). If it is higher in the store, then you can get a price match. Also works the other way too (buying online, but find it cheaper in the store).

This is one of the few times that I have seen a local store beat rockauto on price. That is a good thing. Faster, no extra shipping costs, etc. I've had my Bosch about 2 years so far. Still working well.

I also have found that Advance might not list all of the items that they list on partsamerica, but can probably get them all. I ordered some calipers and the store only shows one or two A1 CARDONE calipers that fit. However, partsamerica shows several other A1 CARDONE units as well as Beck/Arnley and some other brands.

 

Does anyone know the Mazda PN for the inlet screen to the pump? Mine's all rotten and broken, and I could definitely see it getting sucked in. Should be cheap, if they still carry it.

I don't see a part # for the screen. This is probably since MAZDA sells the pump with everything that attaches to the pump in one assembly. I'm trying to recall if my Bosch pump came with a screen or not..I think that I reused mine, but not positive.

There is also the hardlines and such listed in the Chassis section, but I don't see the screen listed either place.

 

By the way, in case anyone comes across this down the road, here's the deal. The GSL-SE has two pulsation dampers - one on the fuel rail, one on the outlet of the pump. The Mazda pump includes the pump, mounting bracket, bent hardline w/ banjo bolt, and new pulsation damper. I never knew there was a PD under the car, and I wish I had as I was tempted to replace it. Oh well.

The Bosch pump can be ordered by part number pretty cheap from Advance, Autozone, Kragen, etc. and is a great pump. It comes with new terminals for the pump and a new screw for the bracket (I broke mine). You can leave the hardline on the bracket, loosen the PD from the pump, and spin the whole pump out of the bracket. It sounds awkward, but it means you don't have to try to remove the old rubber shock-mounts for the hardline. Replacement is as easy as installing the adapter, snaking the pump up through the banjo bolt, and tigtening everything down.

 

Yep. There are 2 PDs, but I don't think that I have ever heard about any problems with the one at the pump. I wonder if you can even buy it separately as it does come as part of the Mazda pump assembly? Have to check the parts fiche, I guess.

 

I just checked on the inlet screen. Mazda has some in a hub in Mississippi and the dealer here in Dallas quoted me the low low price of 42 bucks...ouch!

 

Find an old 'head' shop that still sells screens for pipes and make your own. Take in the old screen to try and match the mesh grade.
