Question for Mod or not

I know this should be in the lounge, but ........

What ever happened to the listings of Screen Names that appeared at the bottom of the page. The one that listed who was logged on to the site at the time. I found this feature really helpful.

Just something eating away at me.....

So that explains the repeated "database errors" I have been getting lately.......

When you think about it, in order to have a list at the bottom of the page of all the people who are online, the php page needs to make a call to the database, which runs a stored proc that goes through *everybody*'s record and checks if they're online or not right now. This includes people who haven't logged on in god knows how long.

So then you multiply that by how many hundred people are requesting page views at any one time and you start to realize that the database is scrolling through the entire list of users probably a few dozen times *per second* and you understand why it would be a drain on resources.

We turned it off because we have so many people in the database of users, and so many people viewing at once now that we felt the resources could be better used elsewhere. No sense in having half your server's power going towards a feature that only a handful really get any use out of.
