question about the vacuum advance

I've had my car for a while and I removed the rats nest and whatnot a while back. Only thing is that I never reconnected the vacuum lines for the distributor. I was told don't bother but I was wondering if I'm missing out on anything by not having it hooked up. Also, would it be safe just to take and connect the vacuum lines from the distributor straight to two of the closed off vacuum plugs for the timing advance to work?

if you want to hook up the vacuum advance, you have to find one Vacuum line that has vacuum at idle, but none under part-throttle for the retarding pot, and one vacuum line that has no vacuum at idle, and has vacuum at part-throttle for the advance....

I don't remember whether the 7 distributor has advance and retard or just advance though...
