Question about running rich in my 81

Hey guys, before people flame me , I did search but didn't find anything specific to my problem. I have a 81 and im running to damn rich. My exhaust smells like gas, actually my whole car smells like gas. My Overheat Exh light is coming on now because i think the carbon is clogging up my damn exhaust. Anyone have any ideas on how to get back to stoich again ? All the ignition is new, and the plugs appear to be new. I just bought it so, everything might just be clean looking. Whats your thoughts ??

Central NJ, you have cats, yeah?
I think they're plugged badly.

This is stiffeling your engines abilty to burn all the fuel, and I guess just gets worse and worse.

yes, the engine oil really smells like gas now, and the car is tough getting started in the morning. i just checked to make sure both ignitors are sparking and everything else and its all good. Has to be something with carb.

I don't think it is, nopistons.
I really think your cats are plugged up.
The compression not being able to exhaust from the engine is blowing exhaust gas and air/fuel mix into your crank.

alright , well i guess ill just replace them instead of messing with the carb. the air filter does, however, have a gassy smell also to it.
