Smile Pushbutton Starter (pic)

I saw some threads on pushbutton starters recently around the forum, so I decided to do a bit of research, and install one in my car. I put mine right into the cigarette lighter. Sorry, pic quality isn't the greatest.

The symbol is a power icon in a rotor. Total cost = $20 and change. (Canadian)

I used Adobe Illustrator for the symbol, printed it off, cut it out with an exacto knife, stuck it on, and clearcoated it. The button was also green to begin with, so I sprayed that too with krylon. As for the actual install, the hardest part was finding what wires to splice into. It fit perfectly into the cigarette lighter hole. The pushbutton was about $15, and relay was $5, plus a small amount of wiring.

Thx for all the comments,

The button I used would be too big for the choke hole unless u grinded it open a bit wider. But, you can use pretty much any push-button you want. Honestly, this was so simple to install once i found out what wire was what.

Damn, that looks good. Which method did you use? I heard there is a method to do it using a Computer Drive power cable.

Yea, the computer cable is for the S2000 buttons i believe. I used an industrial pushbutton, much cheaper.

It really wasn't too bad, finding the right wire took the most time, was scared of messing something up. As long as you know how to wire a relay, ur fine. As for the ignition wires, you need to tap into the main power in the cylinder, white/red i believe, and the starter wire which there was a connector for underneath the column, so I used that.

Yea, turn the key to ON, then push the button.

The way I did it, i disconnected the start with the key, however, if you splice into the starter wire instead of re-routing it, you can have both ways to start it.

I was gonna make it light up, then I got a bit lazy.

Bolox, All you need is a bit of time, parts are like $20 canadian, cheaper if you can find a different button.

Leif, I will have to get back to you on that, I need to see the car. But, as for the wire colours being screwed up, I thought that too. So, i used a thick wire and started prodding terminals from the white/red to everything else on the cylinder. When the starter cranks, thats the one. If you go upside down on your head underneath the steering column, you will see connectors from the ignition cylinder to the actual wires, this is where the colours all change. I *THINK* on the cylinder, its the black/red wire, but underneath the column its black/yellow. Let me check on that to be sure though...

i just had an idea...

all cars over here need to have a dual switch immobilizer right
(same as a kill switch cept it breaks two different essential circits (fuel/ignition/some other important elec. stuff) not just one)

and i have a remote one that also serves as dual stage central locking (press once open the drivers side, press again to open the passengers, press the second button to open the boot)

now, istead of using the key to turn the ignition to ON, use a 3 way switch (so you can have ACC. aswell) mounted on the dash, and the starter button to crank.

this way there is no need for keys, and as the car wont start with the immoblizer turned off (via remote on my key chain) then its just as secure as if you did have keys anyway

anyone think of any problems that might occurr?
