MD Puff of blue smoke when shifting

Just wondering if this could become more of a problem. Got a 83. Just picked it up like two weeks ago. This is my second FB. The first one i didnt have it that long and didnt drive it very much. But anyway. While im shifting from 4k or so i notice that theres a small puff of smoke, Blueish so i know its oil that i can see when i tap the throttle. And im not talking about smashing it but just barlely tapping it. It only happens when i hit the throttle. The carb was rebuilt recently. Dont know how well though. And how can i tell if my oil injection is working. I look at the lines but they seem clear. I know the oils a little dirty so it should be seen but i can see any in the clear line running to the carb.

Could be some oil sneaking past the Oil Control Rings on the rotors into the combustion chamber. Not a deal breaker if it doesn't get real bad. Trick is to figure consumption v. miles. As you likely already know the RX burns oil by design (not that you should see it out the pipe, except maybe on a cold start...). With these now-vintage cars, the trick is: how MUCH? Generally, if your going thru a quart in under 500mi, then things are going south. And your right to want to be sure the Oil Metering Pump (OMP) is doing its job. It doesn't actually meter a LOT of oil: I think the Shop Manual (which I urge you to get) sez something like (??) 6cc's in 6 min @ 2K rpm. If in doubt, you need to pull the OMP hoses off the carb-end, performing the above test into a measuring container and confirm. Meanwhile, do what a lot of us do an add oil to the fuel as a PreMix: I use 8oz bottle of cheapie 2-stroke motor oil into a full tank of gas. You can buy it by the Gallon at WalMart for around $10. At the very least run the PreMix when you perform the OMP test.

Others should have more specific info here....

get a mazda manual!!

On my last motor, I found that running a quart of Lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer in the oil helped reduce the amount of oil getting past the rings. Took my car from undriveable, to almost having no issue at all. So it might help you out.

Good luck.

You'll want to download the factory service manual (FSM) to supplement those other two. I have both the Haynes and the Chilton for my car as well, but the FSM is the authority - - more detail, more specific, less errors.

alright sounds good. Ill look around the net for it later. On a side note one of the previous owners was gonna race her and was doing the suspension to idk what. But if noticed that handling is a little too responsive. Wondering what i could do. Still has the stock springs all around but new rear shocks and massive front sway bar and strut bar and moslty poly urathan bushings. But nothing too dramatic. Just wondering if maybe there was something that was wrong.

any pics of the car? i can post some pics of the oil control rings if you'd like. they are the leading suspect in this smoking problem. only real fix is an engine rebuild.

I dont have good pics. Got a couple of pics. Gonna try to remember to take some. Been really busy. Working and then working on the car. Ill throw some pics up asap.

Ill take some of those pics. I thought of doing a rebuild. Even thought of getting another 12a throwing it in rebuild mine and send it out to get a street port in it. But that a bit of green. Ill see how this goes. The cars got less than 81000miles on the OD. But idk how it was drivin. The interior and exterrior are pretty abused so im asuming that the engine was also.

replacing the engie with another 12A is usually the easiest and most cost effective way to get the car going again. can't wait to see those pics!

If the speedo is correct and there's only 80k miles on the car, then it's more likely the oil seals have shrunk as opposed to being worn out. Try the Lucas before anything else.

Havnt done the lucas yet. Cars gonna be sitting till this weekend. Put the header on but its for 79-80 and is too short to hook up to the exoust so its open header right now and its way to loud to drive. So im gonna get some flexible xoust tubing and to a temp fix and take it to a local Mandrel bending place that does a amazing job. Then ill do a oil change and run the lucas
