Proud of the rotary Whine?
i was just lookin for support from fellow rex fans, i just installed a high flow muffler on my straight piped exhaust with RB headers. power gain was incredible, anyways i was getting out of work and everyone with a lil ricer integra and honda where makin fun of the way i sounded, called me a weed wacker on crack, and to make a long story short, beat the integra with cold air, not a gsr buy about 4 cars and he has headers, and i left the civic like no tommrow. I just want some support from everyone else who has a loud whiney rotary =)

mine is hideously loud at the moment. i actually have to drive like an old lady otherwise i get evil stares from people.
my car doesn't really sound much like a rotary..it's just noise lol. i'm hoping to quiet it down soon, i like the sound of a muffled rotary just as much as i like the sound of an unhindered one.

1980 12A, NA, Racing Beat intake with 4brl Holley, not sure if it has headers, and MagnaFlow exhaust.
Mine is really loud. I'm also not sure about whine. I will try to get an audio file of it somehow.

You think that you get it bad from civics and integras! I hang out with muscle car people. You can't even comprehend the jokes. But I actually like the sound of the rotary, and I get respect because it's fast and none of them can even fathom rotary concepts.

The scream/whine is nice and all, but you have to admit that a lopey *** peripheral port sounds awfully rad itself. Like the parts truck my friend used to drive, a PP 4-port 13B with a big Webber carb on it.

Here are a couple of quotes out of some publications:
"On the rally circuit, the only thing more distinctive than the rx-7'S ability to win is its exhaust sound. It's no wonder that (jealous) competitors talk badly about Mazdas."
~How to Modify Your MAZDA RX-7, 1987
... this one is good reading
"In 1989, my friend Nick (from Rotary Reliabilty and Racing) and I entered the modern La Carrera open-road race in Baja. We figured we could build a competitive car for this all-out tear from Ensenada to San Felipe, and the result was an '81 RX-7 with a peripheral-ported 13B. At the drivers' meeting held right before the race, we told everyone else to watch out when we passed them, since the high-pitched roar of our exhaust could actually shatter their windshields. Well, one guy stood up on the spot and declared that there wasn't an RX-7 in the world that could pass his Porsche.
We started in 11th position, and some of the spectators we talked to later told us they could still hear the RX-7 for ten minutes after we left. Later on in the race, we passed the same Porsche driver going in excess of 175. As we did, Nick purposely let up on the gas and blew out his front windshield!"
~Premiere issue of MAZDASPORT Magazine, 2004
Let the rotary exhaust 'noise' be the last thing rattling in their brain as your taillights dissappear from their view... its a concert to my ears just not everyday though

I've got a stock 12a with Nikki carb and RB street port exhaust. That thing sounds absolutely lovely especially at around 7 grand. It'll be even more sick when I put in the street ported 12a in about 3 weeks. How much louder am I expecting it to be? And does anyone out there have a street port holley carb and intake. All i have is the stock Nikki, and I'm scared to death of leaning it out at higher RPM's. I heard if the rex detonates once, the apex seals shatter. Is this true? And I seriously need a carb/intake because a stock Nikki on a street port is not going to give me the gains i want
HELP!!!!!

You won't detonate from leaning on on a N/A, at least not on an N/A with mild porting like a street port. Might be possible on a bridge or peripheral port since those have much better VE than side ports.
I've run my SP so lean under full power that it melted the spark plug electrodes (bye bye expensive NGK race plugs ) in one dragstrip pass, have burned out the header gaskets, and have turned the exhaust system a nice cobalt blue halfway to the muffler, but no detonation.
I've also detonated, due to radically incorrect ignition timing, but since it is N/A the pressures involved are low enough that the stock seals/side housings can handle it.

If the car is running a 4-barrel I like the sound of mechanical secondaries coming on strongly when ya boot it. My 2 ¢ again.

my car is damn mean lol I love the sound it makes everyone turn and get scared. I don't get messed with by ANYONE. Now I mean that. No one will race me. The ones I do race, well let me say I don't keep a visual. if you get my drift. Had a friend say that my exhaust made him go temporarily deaf in his left ear. People say stuff about us only because we're different. Not because we can beat them. Oh wait cause of that too. And they're scared of the bap bap bap bap.

nothing sounds worse than a honda with those big *** coffee can mufflers, nothing sounds better than a rotary when you are on the highway and you let off the throttle and it just rumbles and pops lightly until you pick up the throttle again rotarys have the cleanest sound period
