project SE/turbo is dead

yeap blew the engine today. i started the egine today and it felt funny and didnt wanna idle, i thought because it was 45 degree out. running rought alll the way to work and then it started to work fine. after work started the car, fine like always 2 turns and running and i started heading home running fine 60 mph no problem until 2 miles before my house i heard a *CLANT* sound im like WTF? and i heard it again. then did a loud noise and that when the engine started missfiring real bad and i started to panic and just about 100 feet of my house it quit. no compression at all. what i blew i dont know, maibe a apex, the cranck, a hole rotor i dont know i know that it sucks. well im not gonna part it out im gonna get a new engine as soon i get the money. maibe with more HP. it really sucks. the engine had 98,782 great miles on it and 3k of them with the turbo. ill post pics of the egine as soon i get it out. thanks

Many condolences for your lost. After the greiving process, you should definitely consider putting a TII block in there. If there's any rule I like to stick to, it's: Broken parts are the best excuse to upgrade! Much luck with your endeavor!

So the engine wasn't rebuilt before you put the turbo on? I always thought that you needed to rebuild b4 going forced induction...?

well, with that many miles it would have been a good idea, but hey, it was a fun project for him i'm sure and he knows that his setup works. now all he needs is a good motor, with lower compression, stronger apex seals, and maybe PORTED? dude, will be set for some HORSEPOWER! i'm not rebuilding my 12a for turbo! it only has 50,000 though since it's last rebuild. GOOD LUCK EDDIE!

Yeah, you could build a custom low compression block for your setup with a port job, and you would be SET!

Sorry for your loss though, I know how it feels, trust me...

Woah! Robert! Long time no see man!

Good call with the J-Spec engine, thats my plan . I plan on running a Microtech controlled 13BT in my car in the future.

By the way, thanks again for the Weber man, it was a great carb while I had it (before it got stolen). Better than stock in so many ways!! I really miss driving my car, and the sound of that baby revving up!!

Sorry to hear about your engine
You were kind of my inspiration as i eventually hoped to run the same setup as you.
And if you do decide to *ahem* sell your turbo setup I would be first on the list.
By the way how much was all the stuff from Robert?
Just curious as i need to rebuild my motor (181,000) miles before I turbo it.

Welcome to my world, i'm never using a engine for a turbo that hasn't been built by me or has more then 50,000miles on the apex seals! I broke my stockport with 99,000miles on it, seals were very thin and weak apparrently.

Luckily a streetport is in it now waiting for 1000miles of pre-boost driving so it will be happy when I go boooost. Time to update the signiture under my name again to streetport turbo!

Is your turbo ok? I don't want to be the one to say it. You probably allready know but IF it was an apex seal blew it could have gone through the exhaust and royally mucked the turbo :[

Apparrently not, I thought the same thing when the engine started running bad, but all the fins look perfect and spins freely as it should. No traces of any sign that a seal went through the exhuast. Some of the apex seal embedded into the rotor and rotor housing, yuk! Very ugly mess!

poeple, im going to say it again im not gonna part out my car or sell nothing of my car , ok all the stuff it broke, 4 apex seals (all 3 in the front and one in the back) gone, the front rotor is shot, both housing are bad. and yes the turbo is gone too, the exhaust blades are broken. so my next engine is gonna be a Jspec. maibe rebuild it before i put it on it and maibe a street port but like robert said im in a tight budget but i hope soon i get a better job that im hoping to get but in the mean time im gonna put the car in a storage until i get the money for the engine. im gonna pull the engine out sometime in the weekend to take pics of it

How do you know it has 4 bad apex seals if you haven't pulled the engine out yet?

looking on the exhaust ports, i spin the engine by hand and i had a flash light looking inside and i see that the front rotor didnt had none of the apex seals and the rear one had two but the third one is missing. and how i know the rotor housing are bad too because my pinky finger is small enought to go in to the housing and they have alot of groove that didnt have before

Did you suck a piece of an apex seal out the exhaust port and that's what destroyed the turbo?
