project 83 GS, fuel system problems

Ok, I'll try to keep this brief. This is on my 83 GS 12a project I'm building. I've installed a mallory comp 70 and holly regulator. I haven't gotton my carb back from sterling yet, but before I do I wanted to test the fuel system, and I've run into some problems. Just to see what would happen, before running a hose to the long hardline I just ran the pump with a bucket under the fitting to see if it would suck fuel out of the tank, and it did. I figure everything is good to go, finish hooking everything up in the back, both feed and return, then I just put a bucket under the line up front, turn on the pump and nothing happened. The pump runs, but no fuel comes out. So i go in the back and pull off the hose going to the long hard line to see if its at least pumping to that point, and nothing, no gas comes out. WTF? Just for the hell of it I pull the return line off and a bunch of gas spills out. how is this possible? There is no carb, and the return isn't hooked up in the front, is it siphoning gas out of hte tank somehow? I'm at a total loss for what to do, I don't understand why its not pumping fuel. The starter is still giving me problems on this car and I'm about to loose my temper with this thing. Any help is appreciated.

Its possible that you connected the return (to the tank) into the fuel pump.

and whats going on with the starter? where's the thread

Its possible, but the hoses are different sizes, I'm pretty sure I got it right, guess i should check just to make sure.
As for the starter heres the thread: https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...8&goto=newpost

The pump must be lower than the fuel level. If you have a small amount of fuel in the tank and the **** end of the car is up on jacks it probably won't pump.

Yea, I've got the fuel lines on the right way, I'm sure of it. As for the fuel level, I mounted the pump on the arching part of the frame rail, where that shutoff valve was stock (the one that stops fuel if the car flips) and I've got about 5 gallons in there, so that shouldn't be the issue. plus, the other night, when it actually did pump fuel (before the whole system was hooked up, and no return was hooked up) I had even less gas than this in it. The one additional note I should make is that the vapor return isn't hooked up yet, I have a hose attached to its inlet on the tank, but it just hangs down, I've yet to finalize the plumping for it. Pretty sure that wouldn't affect this, but worth mentioning I guess. Thanks for the help guys, keep it coming

not yet, I'll be out there for an hour or so this morning before work to see what I can see. I noted some minor fuel residue on the hard line going from my filter to the pump, so there must be a slight leak. Seeing as thats on the intake side of the pump maybe its just sucking a bunch of air. If that doesn't do it, then I'm pulling the pump out and removing the fittings to make sure nothing got caught in the gerator (whatever its called) I'll keep you guys updated.
