Problems with timing/idling...

OK, time for a tune up, but these are the problems:

1. idle drops by 100 when lights are turned on...

2. trailing notch is permantly off because i cannot push the round thing on the side of the distributor cap in more (this is when idle is at 750 or 800, dunno about other rpms).

My current setup: I have lots of disconnected hoses on my carb because i use a racing beat intake housing... I also have a RB exhaust system... also, i'm running it a little rich.

How can i fix these 2 problems?

Thanx,
FS

I had the same problem as your second one with my 85 GSL. Turned out to be a vacuum leak somewhere (I dont remember where). I got it fixed and was able to set the timing.

update:

i looked for a vac leak--but it seems that the hose from that trailing adjuster goes through 2 solinoid valves and then to the thing right next to the trailing adjuster...

also, i need to further retard my trailing.... (incase you were wondering)

I seriously have no idea...I think it was under one of those solenoid valves though, I think it was where it plugged in or something. I remember it was just dry and brittle and had cracked where it was supposed to plug onto the nipple.

Also, with the idle dropping, I know that the idle does drop a small amount when theres a load on the alternator, but 100 RPMs seems a little excessive. It could be related to the lack of the idle compensator, although my car doesnt do that and I have an aftermarket carb as well. Then again, I have lots of electrical upgrades, and an alternator, battery, and cables that are less than 6 months old. I dont really know man...

PS - By any chance are you sure your trying to line the trailing timing up to the right mark? As in, with the engine off, is there paint in both notches? I only ask because I did this to my car just recently. I decided to recheck the timing and I put some white out in each notch before I adjusted it because the paint was so far gone and hard to see. I then found out that I had tried to line my timing up with the wrong mark (it was actually just a nick in the puley I thought was supposed to be the timing mark ). Boy does my car run better and get 16 MPG in the city again .
