problems with temp gauge

i have a electrical temp gauge im putting in and had a weird problem. i hooked it up just to see it work and it started fluttering, i connected the pos n neg. and the other to the sender with clip leads, what did i do wrong

More specific details please. Clips, as in alligator clips? You won't get a good connection with those. The neg goes to a body ground, the pos to the new sender. Who knows what kind of reading you'll get if you connect to the oem sensor.

yes alligator clips, doesnt the pos go to the battery or something positive, and then the other wire to the sender, its a total of 3 wires 1 pos 1 neg and 1 to the sender

humn u think by just hooking up clips leads just to see it work would be fine
