Question Problems with my fuel filter?? (1985 RX-7)

So lately I have been experiencing problems with accelerating. I can be going 40 mph and then all of a sudden i cannot accelerate and the car seems sluggish.
Well recently I was going 65 down a highway and my acceleration stopped altogether and as soon as i pulled over and stopped, my car turned off. I turned it on again and got going about 40 mph when it did it again. And the problem continued until i finally got it home going only about 25 the whole way.

I think it is the fuel filter and I've already bought a new one.
But, this being my first rotary and RX-7 I have no clue where the fuel filter is or how to safely replace it. And by safely I mean I don't want to mess up my car.

So if you can give me some help and tell me if my problem really is my fuel filter that'd be great.

Welcome to the forum and the Darkside. Smart dad you have there.

When posting a question, please give year and engine, 12A/13B, as this can make a difference in the reply you recieve.

Fuel filter is underneath the body, near the left rear wheel. Changing it out is not hard, or dangerous. Check the fittings for leaks when done. If any of the rubber hose lines look worn, cracked or hard, replace them with fuel injection rated hose only, if it's an SE.

In my sig line is a link to the online FSMs and other rotary related material, read, read, read, oh and download whatever you need.

Yes he is very smart. And his car is very fast. I envy him.
Too bad he's working overtime and can't help me this weekend.
But I figure it's good for me to start doing all of this on my own and learn for myself.
We'll see how it goes. I'll post my success (hopefully) or failure after I replace it.
Thanks for the help and the manuals.

I had the same problem with my 85 GSl-SE. i also replaced the fuel filter with no luck. On the inlet side of the fuel pump you will find a small cone shaped screen that had some dirt in it. Once I cleaned it out all my problems were gone.

I looked all over for a replacement but could not find one.

Good Luck.

I was having simmalar problems with my gsl-se. After cleaning out the entire fuel system, pump to injectors, and replacing the fuel filter and fuel pump, I decided to look in the tank. BINGO! Before I bought it the car had been sitting for 5 years and had lots of RUST inside the fuel tank. If this is your problem it can be a hassle to get all that rust out and recoat the inside, but it is possible, and will same you lot of $$$ buying a new tank.
hope this helps.

Well my Dad and I found time to change the fuel filter together. We just finished doing it and it was quite simple.
I haven't driven it to see if it fixed the problem. Hopefully it does.
Oh and isn't the gsl-se fuel injected? I don't if it is bu I thought it was.
But I'll write back with how my girl is running.
Thanks to everyone who helped.

Good luck with it. I'd say the fuel filter is the best place to start. If the car hasn't been driven regularly for a while, you might want to run some Seafoam through the gas tank...
