Problems for freshly started 12a

I finally got the 12a running. There are now numerous problems that have cropped up, as one can expect on my 1st rebuild.

So you know, I have a freshly rebuilt 12a streetported with Ito templates, all new seals, rotor bearings, main bearings. I switched over to a gsl-se oil cooler and have the RB intake with Dellorto 48 with a holley fuel pump and 1-4 psi regulator. The fuel pump running on a 20 amp switch since I couldn't get power from the stock plug. Also, I am running the RB race header open for now.

I have the timing set correctly or at least in the ball park ( don't have a timing light yet). I'm sure it's not out 180 degrees. I was told to carb was jetted for a streetport but I'm not sure.

One problem is that when I turn the ignition on and the fuel pump the pressure reads around 5 psi! If I turn it off and mess with the settings it will read something different like 7.5psi. I will let it sit for a while then come back to it and flip it on just to check and it will read 3.5 psi. What the hell is going on.

The other problem sprang up when I finally got the fuel pressure gauge to read correctly I started the car up and got it to idle by itself. Sounds great right? Well, if I tap the throttle, the revs jump up to about 2000 and very slowly descend. What could be happening? Could it be that the accelerator pump isn't working right, or that its tuned wrong? I realize that I will have to tune it to my engine specifically.

Whew, looks like I have a lot to figure out. So what do you fine gentlemen think?

A new problem has arisen! Sometimes when I turn the ignition switch on a buzzer comes on then when I crank the car, the tach doesn't read correctly, it reads very low. Do you think some wires got crossed or are rubbing?

MountainScreamer... I know where your coming from... I was just there installing my 1st street ported rebuild a few weeks ago and sometimes things can get overwhelming. The best thing to do is to take things 1 step at a time. It's hard to get a response on the forums sometimes when the question isnt focused on a particular area as I'm sure you have seen.

Fuel pressure gauges can be unreliable. Mine is not fluid filled and supposedly a better gauge... BUT its sitting at 1 PSI right now with the car parked....

None the less I've had my Mikuni running from 2psi to upwards of 7psi but the pressure change did not have an effect on deceleration (could be different with a dell)... maybe look at whether the linkage is binding or whether the spring is strong enough to return it back to low idle or whether the cable needs adjusting.

Also the tach IIRC is controled by trailing ignition. Never heard of it registering low just completely out. I would double check the wires to the ignitors making sure none of the pins bent, the cap and rotor condition, and check for spark.

I would definately invest in a timing light (even a cheap one) as soon as possible.

Not sure if that helps but...

Good luck...

Thanks RX7learner, I know there is spark and that the cap and rotor are brand new. I just bought the FPR and gauge from Billy at RE-Speed so it should be good.

Also, my gauge will read 1 psi but when I open up the gas tank the pressure is released. I haven't vented the tank yet so that is the problem there.

I haven't had time to really deal with it since exams are coming up in a couple of weeks and I have papers out the *** due. Also two days after my final exam I go to Japan for a month. I will miss the 7
