Pre-Silencer.... DO I really need one??

ok I have the RB Sp header and the Power pulse mufffler. I want to do a dual 2" exhaust all the way back, and was wondering if I will wish I put pre-silencers on it.
I figure the power pulse muffler is pretty quite anyway, so how loud can it be??
What does everyone think??

Wait a sec, you have a header to a straight pipe to muffler and you consider the car quiet? It's all relative, I s'pose, but most people consider the rotary to be very loud without a pre-silencer of some sort. If you are satisfied, however, I don't see that a dual exhaust would be that much more offensive to the ears than your current setup.

I've got the STOCK header, Bonez cat and presilencer and RB Powerpulse muffer and it's MUCH louder than stock, although, it's not annoyingly loud, such as one of those Honda's with a fart can.

No right now all I have is the Muffler on there, the rest is stock, still have my cats on there.
I am asking, because my muffler shop quoted me $250 do do the dual exhaust, and after buying 2 pre-silencers at +-$100 each than I am going to be paying about the same as the RB streetport exhaust. Just wondering if you guys think I will regret not buying the pre-silencers.
I did drive it around with open exhaust for about a month this last summer (holy **** that was loud, but was great when you pass the slow *** ******* in the fast lane and the car your passing swerves violently because they are trying to escape the air rade and cover there ears!! ) Right now It has a mild exhaust leak and is sorta loud..... my neighbors arent bitching yet....

I'm not trying to be an ***, but how can you have a stock header 85RX7GS? You mean the stock manifold right? On my '82, I had a presilencer to a Ractive dual fart tip and it was loud under acceleration, but not too bad at cruise.

851stgen12a, your standard muffler components will not typically withstand the heat and pusations of the Rotary exhaust, so at $250 for a dual setup, I'm not sure how long it will last. The RB system is engineered for rotaries in mind, so it will last longer. If you are strapped for cash, I've heard that the Monza systems aren't too bad, and they're cheap to boot.

I'm sorry, stock exhaust manifold, but now I'm itching to get a RB header

you dont need presilencers unless you want it really quiet.... the primaflow muffler sounds really deep and not loud at all! plus the car will be much faster!

The shop that will be building my exhaust is owned by a good friend of mine, who is very familuar with rotarys and the exhaust heat. The exhaust will be made of a very heavy guage steel so as to help withstand the rotary exhaust heat.

And there is no way in hell a Monza exhaust will ever go on my car!! I do have at least a little self respect..... lol

trust me, you'll want presilencers if you're not making a race car... you'll have every cop in town giving you a ticket for the noise...

I've got stock manifold, gutted stock cats, and a fart can muffler(stock one exploded). It's loud without the silencer in the muffler, but with it in it's fine, not too loud.

I've got a 13b, RB header, RB presilencer and power pulse exhaust, no cat. I think it's too loud now. I wouldn't want to hear it without the presilencer.

In my experience presilencers don't do much, They tend to change the tone of the exhaust but don't acutally quiet it down much. For my -se I have a header to a cat and then to a 3" Presilencer into a Vibrant Muffler. The piping is 2 1/4" and even without the presilencer it wasn't much louder. To keep it quiet you must put in a cat. I drove most of the summer without a cat and just presilencer with muffler and i had EVERY cop giving me looks and trying to get behind me so its pretty loud.

Also don't worry about the Acutally piping having to be REALLY thick, because i've had mine on for about 3-4 years and it isn't anywhere as thick as RB and i've had no problems at all, and that includes 2 winters. if you were talking about mufflers then yes make sure its really good quality or it will burn up like mine within a few weeks.

Pre-Silencer.... DO I really need one??

Actually, you need TWO.
That is, if I remember correctly.
The presilencers DO quiet it down, as well as giving the exhaust tone a much more pleasant character, without a lot of the tinniness associated with rotaries, ESPECIALLY the 12As. Really heavy exhaust tubing aft of the presilencer is not really necessary, although the heavier wall tubing will be slightly quieter. The stock mufflers are obviously the quietest, but more restrictive than the Power Pulse mufflers. If you live in an area where you don't have to go through a smog inspection, there is no reason to add a cat.
Just another thing to fail...

Have you guys seen this swirl silencer before?

Seems to quiet it down quite a bit, Anniversary Racing tested it with one of there FD's (I believe it's a bridgeported NA) and the noise level at WOT went from 134.3dB (!) to 113.5dB while only losing .2ps. Seems pretty damn good to me, anyways here's the video:

Oh and here's a link to a much more high quality version (26.6mb) of the above video, if you're really interested...

I found that particular silencer here:
http://www.a-rf.co.jp/A-RF/etc-parts/index.html

As for where they're installed, it looks to me like you just put them in between a spot where two sections of the exhaust piping bolt together, kind of like a gasket.

Dangit, now I need to learn Japanese so I can order one.

Looks pretty easy to make though.

I wonder if it would go right after the header?

I have a header with a punched out cat with a big fart can for a muffler. Ya its loud but sounds cool to me. I haven't recieved a ticket for noise as i just pop her into neutral and coast by the cops when i see em. Otherwise I would be getting a speeding ticket first.

I've got a pace-setter header, monza muffler, and I just replaced a useless cat w/ a 40 series delta-flow flowmaster today. It sounds pretty good, a bit loud on acceleration of course. Unfortunately my buddies weld job put the flowmaster a bit low at the rear and I'm having ground clearance troubles!
