To power steer, or not to power steer?

THAT, is the question.

I'm thinking of doing one of those fancy underdriven pully kits (mainly for looks, not function, as i know they do near nothing)

And i'm goign to take off the air pump, and i'm thinking of the power steering as well. Its giving me a little bit of grief, and i'm not sure i want it.

I went around for 2 years on a GS w/o PS, just fine (loved it, actually), and i'm thinkin of just takin it off, to tidey things up a bit in there.

What do you think?

Oh yeah, and anyone wanna buy a PS setup off a 85 GSL-SE???

my GSL has never had power steering and I'm very glad as it takes away from the "feel" of the road. YMMV

I would keep it because "functionally" it provides quicker steering response over the non-ps unit. If you like the "truck-like" steering of the non-ps then go for it.

at anything over 10 mph, the steering w/o PS is highly (if not over) responsive. 1st Gen are notorious for oversteering and if you are just rolling forward at 1mph, you won't even miss the PS - promise!

Again though, Your Mileage May Vary, see participating stores for details.

the powersteering racks have a tighter ratio.. but you can keep that if you get rid of the pump.. just loop the line back into itself (rather than changing out the rack). this is a popular mod with the second gen guys...

I autocrossed one for a while that I thought was bad. (previous owner said so) The belt was off and I just didn't worry about it for some time. Turns out there was nothing wrong with it other then the belt being off. I rather liked the ratio and feel of it disabled when racing.

Iam an auto-xer and love the fact that I dont have power steering. I can feel actually what my front wheels are doing at all times.
With very sticky 205/50/15's it takes a little muscle at a stop but once you start moving at all it isnt bad at all..

I find that my non-PS '79 is alright without it, but it tends to get a bit hairy when you're trying to pull out of a parking spot and the A$$hole behind you has pinned you in so you can't roll and steer at the same time....

Overall - Non-PS = tighter, more feel for the road, but a bitch to dry-steer with

I find without ps to be kinda cool, I like having full control verse the help from ps, only time I ever wish I had it is when Im dead tired and turning from a dead stop but when rolling its just fine

non power rules, I hate power steering on older cars cause its way too powerful. Like my TA, you can steer with one finger if you wanted too. The power steering on my dad's accord is nice cause its speed sensitive, so you sitll get that nice road feel under most conditions.

I love my non-power steering rex....At first it took some time to get used to, but I like it allot now. Even when I'm at a dead stop I just don't really notice it anymore...it's no big deal.

When I drive my dad's van...man..it feels so weird....takes awhile to get get used to it. heh
