Question Porting questions...

been reading a lot about ports lately...tryin to decide what i wanna do. i cant do to much til i leave for the air force july 12th, but still settin up my to-do list for the car. ive been thinkin bout sellin it and buyin somethin new after i join, but i figure i could make the rex one heck of a car with the money id be makin. questions:

where can i find a website for porting? that explains all the pros and cons, the differences in ports, and all that what-not.

how much does it cost to do the different ports?

how hard is it to do your own port and what tools are required?

what do i need to change out after i do the port itself?

thanks for the help in advance.

I bridgreport the first motor I built, last fall. I read every thread I could find on porting here, at NoPistins and the AusRotary forums. Pay particular attention to Judge Ito, BDC and a few others. I had a very good thread going at NP, but it got lost in the crash.

I bought carbide burrs off eBay, sanding rolls from McMaster-Carr, template from Mazdatrix, grinding stones local.

It takes time and patience to do, practice on a set of junk irons first. Saftey glasses are a must and I recommend ear plugs.

You will need a die grinder and a good compressor, (mine is 80 gal., 7hp, 2-stage, 220 volts), that may be a bit big, but I hate waiting for re-charge. I spent about 200 in porting tools. I have more burrs than I needed for porting, but I find I use them for lots of other little projects too.

You should do the exhaust, whether you port or not. If you port, you will need to modify the stock Nikki, or go after market carb and intake, if you have a 12a.

I won't tell you to search, but research is what I did until I felt comfortable enough to take this job on by myself. That also includes the engine building and required supporting mods.

My first port was a half-bridgeport that i just finished on my 12a. I spent $10 total on tools to port. I used a variable speed dremel (my dads) with a carbide bit ($10). I drew ou the ports on the irons with a permanent marker (comes off) and did not even purchase a porting template. The porting process itself took about half a day of patience and work.

Im going to be running the half-bridgeported 12a with a holley 600cfm carburetor and a racing beat high rise intake and racing beat headers to a custom 2.5" exhaust. Im very excited.

In total, im spending less than $100 on the ENTIRE rebuild and port. It is a total poor mans everything, as im only gonna replace the soft seals. This is very experimental right now but i dont have a choice as im one poor bastard
