porting? 84gsl 12A

I've been pretty good with misc Items on my 84gsl (removed emmissions and tuned -no cat convert) -but I don't understand porting- I've read and searched previous threads, and I see that RB offers templates and instructions. I'm pretty good with a grinder/ dremel tool and still have a stock carb(but without emissions) can I do this myself, would it do much good without upgrading the carb, and can someone describe the principle of porting. thanks for any help-By the way- state has no emmissions to speak of, and header is in near future.
thanks

thanks for the response -I will try street port and extend port searches but most of the threads talk about how to adapt your engine to porting and other issues- but it is the basic principal I would like to understand, and what is done to 'Port' and engine- brief response would be appreciated.

i don't think the stock carb will be able to flow enough Air fuel mixture to give u any reasonable amounts of hp gain with a streetport

Quick and dirty answer. Porting is like putting a hotter cam (lift, duration, overllap) in a piston engine. The engine MUST be apart to do it. And lastly, the most benefit will be obtained in conjunction with a freeflowing exhaust system, and a less restrictive intake system (Carb, manifold).

Consdiderable hp can be gained with a nikki,if it is properly modded.

If you look at the specs of Yaw`s streetport, and you port to that specifications,or let someone port your engien for you to that specs ,you will be happy with the results.I`am not sure if its still on his new website.
