Porsche Rear Seat Test Fit

Porsche 924 or 944 rear seats will fit in first generation Rx7s. However some modifications do have to be made. First generation Rx7s are wider and the back of the storage bins area slopes at a lower angle. So what I'm going to do is build a simple custom frame to raise the angle that the rear seat sits at so the center trim of leather will match up with the center console box. The frame will also keep the seat in place.

The second thing that has to be done, which I have yet to do, is run a tubular bar or something similar through the upper portion of the seat from one side of the Rx7 to the other so that portion of the seat will be able to fold down, flush. I have yet to figure out how to do this, in the Porsche that this rear seat came from the seat was built into the car. Below are some pictures of the test fit, to see exactly what has to be done.

You see this whole project is kind of funny. My 83' Rx7 had no bins just the bin frames. Without having the plastic bins in the frames, the metal frames were making a hell of a lot of noise. Just happened to find the Porsche rear seats before finding a good set of bins. The rear seat will never really be used except maybe for transporting my cat around or maybe something for a couple speaker boxes to sit on. I've had six Rx7s and never really had much use for the bins. Everything should work out fine with these seats and they look nice. I'll make more post as my progress with this project continues. Shouldn't take that long to finish everything up.

Well....good question LOL. Maybe the glove box, center console compartment, or in bag or small box placed on or under one of the rear seats. Now that I think of it the MMO can go in the storage bins of my 85' Rx7 that has 227,000 miles (needs some MMO or seafoam soon).

I think the funniest "rear seat" story I heard was at last year's meet in Ottawa.

Enter Spencer and Sarah. A cool young couple who both had Rx7s. They had a child, so one of the Rx7s "had to go".

Sarah didn't want to let hers to, neither did Spencer.

So they compromised. Spencer put back seats in his Problem solved. At least until the daughter is old enough for her own 7.

No one will ever sit back there. As I mentioned there was nothing behind the front seats, except the the bin frames. There was no rust in the bin area, so it had to covered up with something....and I found the Porsche rear seats before finding any storage bin compartments.

Well as far as any nookie going on in this car...not enough room. Rx7s, in general, aren't the best cars for fooling around in. However Rx7s are excellent cars for picking up the ladies and getting them to where ever you need to take them fast.

Another option could have been ordering the rear ost carpet piece for an SA. They didnt have the bins.

Well, the only difference I could tell by looking is that the bin metal structure was not there and it was simply carpet. if you PM 64MGB or someone else with an SA, I am sure that they will send a pic. I am not sure what interior colors the SA was available in though.

BTW, "ost" was supposed to be "most" in last post.

I actually do have that piece of carpet (...which I forgot about). However I also have the carpeting from underneath the seats of the Porsche. The Porsche carpeting has the holes for the seat belts, again not that anybody is going sit back there but the seat belt assemblies give it a finished look. The SA carpeting doesn't extend far enough up the side walls to cover them completely, either.

Honestly, I like your idea. It is definitely wanted by some people to have rear seats and finding decent stock ones is probably harder to find than anything else. I was simply throwing out the option to others reading this. Though, it is good that you explained that the porsche carpet is needed for this installing the porsche seats. Very good thing to know if someone else tries this. Keep us updated.
