Please take a look at my carb! pics

heres the question,

What is all the build up ?

I was speaking to a friend/mechanic today. he was saying that if i see this type of build up in the carb/efi on the rex that my issue with the motor is more than likely carbon lock??

whatever that is...

does this make any sense to yall?

EM

P.S. as you can see, carbs are not my specailty...lol

I've seen that on a lot of throttle bodies, not just RX-7's adn not just carbbed cars.

It's normal carbon. Comes off with carb cleaner or a bit of soaked in ATF.

What kind of carb is that?! It's freakin cool!

Here's a thought...
I think alot of that is simply varnish from fuel combined with a dirty air element.
I think carbon buildup is something that happens as a product of combustion. That's why I'm incline to think that the black stuff is really dirt/dust set in gasoline varnish.

That's what my carb used to look like... (except i had 4 barrels)
when you clean it, make sure you get it complete out--sometimes it will travel into pipes, get stuck, etc and prevent flow...

That's not a carb, that's a throttle body.

I was about to say the same thing. It looks just like a throttle body of a 2nd gen and I only know that, because my next door neighbor just pulled his out to make some modifactions to it.

Carb vs Throttle body

yeah yeah, i know...

its just so much easier to type carb...lol
Im gonna give it a good cleaning and slap it back on then try the mmo thing GOD I HOPE THIS WORKS. if it doesnt that means i gotta do a rebuild. well ,...and thats a scary thing. Im one of those guys that if I can take it apart,..i can put it together. the only prob im running into now is I have no garage and its cold as a witch's tit outside..

Anyone have a garage in Delaware i can borrow for say.... 2 months??
Ill pay!!...lol

Fair warning all if i break into this thing we will all have a sense of accomplishment when its done... cause ya'll are gonna help me put her back together via the message board (unless youd rather come and turn wrenches on it)

I am prepared to drop cash into it, the wife has conceeded the fact of trying to get me to get rid of the rex. So when I do I'll go all out, Ive posted before asking suggestions of what mods I should do, if any, however I dont think anyone took me very seriously. So,... seriously, what would yall do??

Can anyone say Rx7 Club Car??....LOL

Further, I think your right Sterling, the Filter on this thing had say 40 pounds of dirt in it , well.. it was pretty grungy anyway.

Keep the advice comming

wait... what problem are you trying to solve by cleaning the throttle body?

a carboned up throttle body really only causes the throttle to stick shut, so you have to push down hard to get it to break free. that's all.
