please help no heat!

i just bought my first 7 two days ago. after reading this forum for about three weeks so thanks for all the good info. my car is a 83 gs the only problem with the car is the heat does not work. the blower is working but it just blows cold air. i checked and the heater core seems to be hooked up and does not seam to be leaking. does anyone know what the problem could be and how to fix it. other thanthis i love the car but i have to get it fixed soon because my son likes to ride in it but its to cold with no heat.

Does the temp gauge register anything? Warm the engine up for a while... If it doesn't register, or the temp goes down when you turn on the heat, you need a thermostat...

Ironically, they always fail in the winter... The one in my daily driver is blown and it's wrecking my milage... That's the only bragging right I have in that car. 35+ MPG... It's too damn cold to work on my car though...

I live in TN too and for the past couple of weeks it has been fairly hard to get heat unless you let it warm up for a while. Before I replaced my thermostat It took a good 20mins or more to warm up in the cold.

Robert Shaw thermostats are good stuff also....180 for the cold temps and a 160 for the summer is my routine...

Make sure your coolant is topped off, without enough coolant your engine will cool properly but won't get to the heater core. If you don't get heat even when it is warmed up then that is your problem.

If it takes forever to warm your car up, then your thermostat is stuck open *shot* and allowing your coolant to circulate through the radiator.
