Please help. Horrible vibration and noise when taking off in 1st
Please help. I have a 1980 12a. Ever since I had my engine rebuilt/ had bronze clutch installed, my car makes a horrible sound and vibrates terribly when I take off in first gear from a stand still position. When i shift and let go of the clutch, you can hear the sound, but no vibration. The car does NOT vibrate when idling or any other time, only when leaving first gear. The sound and vibration seem to come from the transmission. The sound is like two metals rubbing together,,, but NOT a squeeky metal sound or grinding,,, like a squeel,,, like when you try to open an old window. The vibration is incredible,, the whole car shakes until I've finished releasing the clutch. It has a bronze clutch and a STOCK pressure plate with new throw out and pilot bearings. I was told it could be the tranny mount, but I replaced it. I was also told it could be the pressure plate. How about a bad front u-joint? Any help would be greatly appreciated
"To love the rex is to hate the rex...." I'm at that point in some rx7 owner's lives when they regret getting an rx7 and even consider selling the car after pouring their time and heart into the car and bleeding a whole load of money...

woow, too many things to ponder, but I have a "shutter" I would call it, when I start out in first gear. I hear no metal sounds , just shutters bad in first and in reverse. I was told to check the motor mounts and tranny mounts. Now you have a new clutch and rebuilt engine so, I would consider bringing it back to where you had the work done and have them check it out. When you have metal sounds , you best have a professional look at it /drive it and hopefully they can tell you the problem...good luck..cjf

well if "shuttering" means your car vibrates like it's having a seizure when releasing the clutch in 1st and reverse,,, then it's the same kind of problem... maybe vibrate isn't the right word,,, shuttering might describe it best,,, it's like the car shakes until i'm done releasing the clutch.... i would imagine the sound i hear is from the tranny moving so much,, but it wasn't the transmission mount.

Since the problem is only when the clutch is released, then it would be safe to say that there lies the problem. I've never used a bronze disk so I don't know they act during break-in. Do they have metal friction pads or in them,I mean, bronze IS a metal. Maybe they don't work well with stock flywheel. What flywheel r u using? Ur squeeking, or squeeling noise could be the release bearing. But I agree with the other post, I'd take it back to who ever did the work.

check out the "ENGINE TORQUE BRACE" that racing beat offers for sale at $64.00. I think this is the link to it. http:/www.racingbeat.com/resultset.asp?partnumber=14030 This brace is designed to stop the shutter when engaging 1st gear and reverse ( I guess it is pretty common...Hope this helps...cjf
