Question Please help with '79 rear hatch

Okay I'm getting ready to restore an old '79 RX7 limited edition but one of the larger problems is that its back window was shattered and never replaced. I've been searching around for somewhere to buy glass for it, but everyone seems to go back only to 1980, one year short of what I need. I don't know if glass from an early '80s model would work, so what I need is some advice on where to get glass for a '79, or if there is some other option that I could consider. Somewhere in the northern Virginia/Washington DC area would be best if you know somewhere to buy from. Please post if you have any advice. There are also other problems with the car (no air conditioning, etc.) so if you have any advice as to what else I should do while restoring, please post. Thanks alot.

hey, welcome to the forum.

We have a search function that you should use, and check out the FAQ, there is TONS of good info on the forum, search around for a while and get familiar, and then go ahead and ask again if you can't find the answer

oh, and as far as the glass goes, whatever you do, do NOT buy it new... it goes for like $600. You can get an entire parts car for much less than that.

idea

Alright, I just had an idea. The first generation RX7 was from '79 all the way to i think '85, right? so couldn't glass from any first generation RX7 go on my '79 RX7? I think I can find glass from an early 80's model fairly easy, so I just need to know if that glass would work.

Make sure they latch and arms are the same. I know a guy with an 80 and it looks like an even swap. I'm not clear on later models, but they should be the same from what Victoria british sells.

Any glass should work, They all apear to be the same. But, the 79 ( mine at least) Has a different way of connecting the Defronst lines. The power goes down the strut and and has a connection at the bottom of the glass. The later years has a pig tail and the connection at the top. If not using the Defroster then it will not matter in any way. When I replaced my stuts I did not move any of the defroster crap over, and just left them unhooked.

Okay, with that information, does anyone know where I could get a first generation rear glass or the entire rear hatch in the northern Virginia/Washington DC area?

Yeah, junkyards are great places to look. Call around and ask if they have the car you're looking for before you head over, just to save you a wasted trip.
