planning on rebuilding a carb

well i just failed a presmog. well i guess its not even real smog either. anyways i was at about 600+hc and 1.24co's. i read i should give my car a tune up and check my acv and air pump. then i thought to myself...why not take it another step and rebuild the carb too since it'll be a "tune up"

my question is which rebuild kit should i buy? i was looking into the mazdatrix rebuild kits and they list several different kits for each model fb's. 79-80, 81-82, 83 only, and 84-85. after seeing this, wats the difference between years in carbs? i plan to get another carb from the junk yard since i need my car for work. any help would be greatly helpful.

btw, ive never dealt with a carb before. so im kinda scared to work on my carb first

-jolly good

Since you are in Cali, get the kit and spare carb that matches your's. There are small differences in CA carbs, from the rest of us. Since you have never done a carb before, a practice one is a good idea. Download the carb manual from the link in the archives.

The only difference I found between years is the airhorn gaskets. Some rebuild kits will send you two of these so it fits whatever year your building. Order from mazdatrix for the year of your 7. I ordered mine from Carquest and was unhappy with the kit. No new alummiun crush washers or gasket for the altiutude compensator, plus no new cotter pins. As for help, a hanyes owners maunal or better yet a Mazda workshop maunal is very helpful because they give you directions on taking the carb apart step by step. Make sure you check your float levels with the mesurments that come with the rebuild. After that ,you should be set my friend!
