Front end got messed up real bad at TMS, re-tubeing front end. looking at replacing strut type orig type of suspension with dual wishbone coilover type, seams pinto spindles are prevelent out there for stock car types, has anyone tried a RX-7 hub / brake on a pinto spindle, or pinto rim on a RX hub?

 

Why would you want to go with a dual wishbone setup. The Macpherson strut setup is much better IMO. The geometry gets a little screwed up at the limits of dual wishbone setups.

 

Top section where the strut plate was is now 90* to the ground. so from firewall fwd on pass side is torqued. Tubeing would allow interchanging parts, ie, threaded body shock is easier to get at a track than a RX7 strut housing. Wishbone also gives much more adjustability.

For the limitations of the RX-7 shell, he's right. The body rails on the RX-7 are *so* much wider, and the fact that the inner fender is a structural piece, means that an upper control arm would have to be so short as to seriously compromise geometry.

I don't know how the FD's suspension is set up, do tey have their body rails hitched up higher so the upper control arms can sit further inboard?

FWIW - a Mustang II/Pinto rail-rail width is about 36", whereas a 1st-gen's rail-rail width is about 42". Fitting a rotary into the narrower body rails would require some pinched header arrangement.

 

He is running GT. He said the car is tweaked and he is contemplating tubing the front half. He would not be limited by the stock frame rails or inner fender wells. There is more than adequate room to build a wishbone setup between the engine and the track regulations of GT.
