PICS: S1 or S2 Tranny

1980 SA RX7: took the Auto Tranny out and purchased a used SA tranny from another board member. Used the stock tranny mount and driveshaft because these should work perfect with a 1979-80 Manual Tranny. this tranny I bought is too short like a Series 2 or 3 is supposed to be. Can anyone tell me what Series it is and if there is a different tranny mount I am unaware of?

Also, I have an 83 GSL Rear Diff and the SA Auto Drive shaft does not bolt up. Thanks for the help

that *looks* like an S2 or 3 trans but with an SA tail stock.. not quite sure though. you have the large flanged differential found on 83 and up 7's. the driveshaft you have there is pre 1983. you will need a large flanged driveshaft from an 83 and up to go along with that.

Wow, so perhaps someone hybrid-rebuilt this tranny at some point. The member who sold this to me said he removed it from a Series 1 at a junkyard and never ended up installing it himself. I wanted a perfect fit but the car is meant mostly for learning autox anyways. I will find a driveshaft, thanks for the input.

The SA trans has the shifter farther forward than a s2/s3, so I'd say that you have a SA trans. You're putting this into an 80 right? If so, what you have is correct. Unless I'm missing something here...

As Dave said, 83 and up uses a larger driveshaft flange on the pinion, so you need a 83-85 driveshaft...

Correct SA/S1 tranny. "Seems" short but the shift lever is angled to stick out correctly, further back.
Did you get the shift lever with it? Will make sense when inserted into hole. BTW you might want to by a new "shift kit" of bits that fit around the shifter mount point. Not $$. Still available from Mazda and/or Mazdatrix (.com). Likewise new gaskets a good idea.

Actually, I have the shifter that is bent and to be honest I did not try it yet. It looks as though there is no way it would work but your post makes me a happy rotor head.

So I should be fine with my SA drive shaft if I swap out the yoke for the 83 GSL Rear Diff..?

i dunno, it looks all wrong to me.. the shifter appears too far forward. i'm not an SA expert and can't ever remember pulling a trans out of an SA, so it could be correct, but looks to be just too short.. the shifter on the SA IS angled, but as i remember, it more centered in the opening.

it is wrong as it is too close to the radio panel. the shifter tower should be in the middle. look at the the first picture, there is large space between the tailshaft and driveshaft yoke, means the yoke is only half way in.
