Pics of my carbon infested 12A
Well I've had my 84 GSL since Sept 95. It had about 85k miles at the time. The engine locked down about 5 years ago with 124k on the clock. I was like damn...another 1st gen bites the dust. At the time I wasn't to worried about getting it fixed because I had a 91 vert to drive. Now my 91 vert has no compression on the rear rotor and all I have to drive is my 94 Rx7. Anyways I've been putting to many miles on the 3rd gen so now I figured that it was time to rebuild the 1st gen.
Some background:
Back in 99 I removed the engine to replace the clutch so I would have reliable transportation to make my 120 mile round trip to work. During this 3 month period I put 10k on the engine. I then let my sister drive the car while she was in college. The engine lasted 5k in her possession . I'm thinking damn girl you fucked up my car. The engine was locked down. I immediately though carbon lock.
Fast forward to present day. I removed the engine to began the rebuild and notice something wrong. I notice that the rod connecting to the OMP wasn't connected. So that means that my engine has been running without the OMP fully functioning for those 15k miles. It turns out back in 99 when I pulled the engine to replace the clutch, I also removed the carburetor and solenoids to clean the block. When installing everything, I forgot to reconnect the rod. oops!
In these pics you can clearly see all the carbon that was present. I couldn't believe to mountain of carbon dust in the last pic

Yea I know but this was 5 years ago when the engine originally failed. At the time I didn't have all the knowledge I have now with rotarys because of this forum. Live and learn! Besides I think the OMP was still putting out oil, just not enough to properly lube the seals at higher rpm's.
