Question Parts Swapping...Is This Possible?

Can I use the axle housing from an 84 GS and install an -SE diff with -SE axles, brakes, etc? Basically turning the GS rear axle assembly into an -SE rear axle? The reason Im asking is because the upper right control arm mounting point on my Dads -SE broke off the axle housing, and rather than weld it, we were thinking we could just use the housing from the 84 GS parts car...Would that work, or would it be better to just weld the sucker?

Crap, nevermind. I just checked the parts catalog I have and they have different part numbers. Looks like Im stuck welding the mount... Oh well, it was worth a shot.

or try a gsl rear end swap. alot of the guys here have done it. just ask around for the process. im thinking of doing that myself, because i got an 82 gs and the gsl has the same lug pattern whereas the se has larger 4x114

I think you could, Rotomomotor. I have an SE diffy in my 85 GS with GS axles and the GS housing.
You cant put the SE axles in, though, becuase the mounting flanges are different. So you would be stuck with the different lug pattern on the rear.

You are correct. The drum brake cars have a 4 bolt mounting flange. The disc housing has 3. More info here

Yeah, well what I wanted to do was end up with one -SE rear end with an unbroken mount, and a pile of parts, lol. I think Im just gonna weld the mount though.

Thats the plan now.

I just found out that Im gonna be the proud owner of another POS car shortly. There is an 85 -SE that my Dad was gonna buy for $450 that has horrible paint, a dented fender, flat tires (new, but flat), and kinda dirty interior thats been sitting for like 6 months. It didnt have the broken axle mount ot brake line that my Dads has, so he wanted it to drive until he could fix his. Well, I went and looked at it with him the other night and it turns out that it has no compression on the rear rotor (guy stopped driving it cause of "horrible vibrations and backfiring" one day). Well, my Dad still wanted it because it has some stuff that he can use on his -SE so he offered him $100 for it. The guy said he would take it, so I guess my Dad is gonna buy it.

Well, I need -SE suspension for my turbo project car, so Im gonna pay my Dad back the $100 for the car when I get payed on Friday, and get the suspensionm hatch, and some other things off it that I need for my car, and he can still have everything he needs for his car . Everyone wins .
