parking brake cable removal

Search revealed nothing useful, so....

Pulling the rear end out of a '83 GS. I've got everything off except the parking brake cables, which are proving to be a tad recalcitrant...

How in God's name are you supposed to remove these things from the backing plate? I considered a hacksaw but they are in better shape (almost new) than the ones that are now on my car, so I'd like to keep them if possible.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Bump?

Let me add that I did remove the wire clips from the cable end, and there was like this rubber boot that slid back up the cable to expose where the cable enters the backing plate. I just can't tell what you're supposed to do from that point. Is it threaded in?

I donno if this will help you, but I ended up using vise grips as the line the nuts just stripped way to easy. I did actually get to put it back together with vise grips and it worked. They are really rusty, and I simply didnt have the time to put my new ones on yet.
