I just redid my wheels('83 LE wheels) this week. Painted the inside of them gunmetal grey, and polished the outer lip. One of them came out perfect, paint it VERY nice. One of them came out alright, a few ripples, and two of them came out just plain bad, ripples all over, paint is uneven. It looks like the paint dried half way, then the wheel was put on a tree shaker and the paint moved all around and made a bunch of ridges, then it dried the rest of the way. All the wheels were cleaned the same before, and all of them got two thin coats of the paint. I really don't know what is went wrong. I'm about halfway done sanding them down right now. When I repaint them I really don't want them to be messed up again, cause it's bitch to sand these wheels. Any special tips to make sure the paint sticks right. It's Dupli-Color Engine Enamel.

 

are you priming them first? That helps a ton. What did you clean them with? Denatured alcohol works wonders. btw, i saw the pic in the other thread, they aren't LE wheels. Look like Enkei's or Rikens.

 

I just sandblasted and painted a set of rims for a friend, and they look GREAT. Dried perfectly, very even considering that they were horrible looking corroded chrome wheels before. First I sandblasted (aircompressors are great), which gave is a nice evenly rough surface for the paint to stick to. then came 3 coats of paint and 2 coats of clear, all duplicolor. if i can get it to work right, heres some pictures.

coldy, im sure if you make sure your surface is nice and rough, and lay on 3-4 light coats of paint within 15 minutes of each other, just long enough for the previous one to get tacky, the wheels should turn out great

 

What's the easiest way to strip off the messed up paint? Tires are still mounted on the wheels and I can't take them off.

 

Am i the only one who uses primer here?

Damn right, paint doesn't like bare metal.

 

I didn't use primer, but it wasn't bare metal either. It had some kind of gold stuff on there to begin with. I roughed it up a little with some sandpaper and then cleaned them again, and painted them. Now I have 2 perfect ones, and 2 that my dad is sandblasting at work that I'm gonna prime then paint again.
