yesterday i finally washed my 82 GSL for the first time(only had the car for two weeks and its been snowing and i just got it running fairly well yesterday) and in the middle of washing the windshield and passenger door glass, i noticed that the "dirt" wasn't coming off. i discovered that a lot of the car is covered in a metallic overspray. whats the best way to clean the overspray off of the windshield and door glass? i was thinking a light coat of thinner on a rag. for the paint, i'm sure the crap will wet sand and buff off. i'm open to suggestions.

 

I would use a razor blade first then maybe a little paint thinner.

 

Yea, I had the same issues after doing some rattle can spraying in the garage...my entire car was coated with some failry thick overspray. I cleaned all the windows with a razor blade scraper...no problem.

I WORK AT A AUTO GLASS SHOP (19years) AND THE BEST WAY TO REMOVE PAINT FROM GLASS IS LIKE HE SAID A RAZOR BLADE BUT MAKE SURE YOU WET THE GLASS, WITH GLASS CLEANER OR SOAP SOLUTION SO THE BLADE DOES NOT SCRATCH GLASS. NO SCUFF PADS OF ANY KIND ARE RECOMENDED FOR SOMTHING LIKE THIS. AND ONCE YOUR DONE USE ALCOHOL TO WIPE OFF GLASS

Carburetor or Brake clean works fine. Takes it right off.

 

methohydrate-cant spell it but aka paint thiner is the easiest way because you don't have to worry about scratching the glass because i know i have with a blade then my dad just told me 2 use that stuff

 

USE A NEW BLADE!! and do not turn it over, once you use the blade it takes shape to the winshield and if you turn it over it WILL SCRATCH the glass.....

 

While this is excellent advice, there's no need to yell it out.
Also, you forgot to mention the neccessity to use a fresh blade, and never flip it over. The sharp edge can get little nicks in it, which will scratch the glass, if it gets flipped over.

really? i thought steel wook would scratch glass. rx-7 obsessed said that thinner will work fine and not compromise the windshield. seems like thinner would save a lot of time. if scraping the paint off with a blade would be the better choice i'll do that tomorrow. if not, i MAY try thinner.

 

Scotchbrite also makes a triple ought "000" steel wool alternative that will not scratch the glass. Use with a good cleaner and it will look like new again.

As long as you make sure the glass is wet, either a razor blade or fine steel wool will be okay. I use steel wool for removing the shoe polish from windows after races (used for marking number/class info). But again, make sure the glass is wet when doing this...

 

thanks for the tips! i think i'll try the steel wool. the 000 seems like it would be a fine enough material that it wouldn't scratch the glass. after i clean the windows i'll have to get the overspray off of the body. if the overspray wont buff off, i may have to wetsand it.

 

Try McGuire's cleaner wax for that one... Stuff works miracles. Otherwise, you might need a rubbing compound. Wetsand would be the last resort, I think. Good luck.

 

if the weather cooperates, i'll be out there today trying to some of this crap off of the glass. i'll throw up some pics tonight of teh progress.

 

too much work there. Just soak it with brake cleaner and wipe off the excess paint.

 

Some salt, half a lemon and a rag should take it off, then clean it up with some baking soda and water.

 

you guys think brake cleaner would take it off? i bled the brakes and replaced the front pads today instead of the windshield. i have thinner and thought that a small amount of thinner on a rag would do wonders.

 

Brake cleaner works. I use it all the time for overspray even on the paint. That's all it does to the paint is remove the wax, it does not damage the paint.
