how much are you guys paying for a top of the line job, excluding expenses for paint and clear? basically labor only.

Very hard to guess without seeing the car and how much prep work it would need. Another cost factor is color. Is it a recoat or a color change? If a color change, how far do you want to take it? Door jambs add some, engine bay adds a lot.

I have a guy here that manages an autobody paint store. He will come to my shop and spray for as little as 150, if the car is masked off and completely ready, for base/clear. Take it to his shop and he starts at 1500 for all the prep, paint and spray.

A top end job can easily run over 4k. My neighbor has a 67 Biscayne and went shopping for restoration work one afternoon. With body panel replacements and a top end job, his estimates were from 8-18k.

When I do my own cars, it usually runs me 4-500 for all of the materials, using a midrange base/clear.

If I want an excellent paintjob, I would expect to spend no less than $2k.

Yeah, a lot depends on the level of bodywork and rust repair you have to do, if you have to do any.

A lot also depends on whether you are just doing a repaint or are stripping the car and then redoing it from scratch.

My T-bird went to a local restoration shop and cost 7500, that was with media blasting, some light rust repair (one fender had a rust out area where the exhaust caused some rust through-strangest thing I had ever seen), paint, clear coat and all the finish work. blocking and cutting can take some money too.

I plan on doing a similar thing to the RX7 in a few years when I am ready to put her through the fix up routine. I don't think I will put 7K into the thing but I plan on doing a lot of the work myself. I didn't have time to do the work on the T-bird (I was in the middle east doing that Army thing) but hopefully I can do a lot of the stripping and dent repair on my own.

Paint I leave to people who know what they are doing.

That's not a bad price. Last summer I had the 84SE (signature line) repainted at a local hot-rod shop and they used the Mazda paint code that I asked for. Custom mixed paint, prep, sand, minor door ding repair, and base/clear ran $1650.

I asked them to do door jambs, hood, etc. and also wanted all body accessories removed for the paint process - in the event that I ever damage an aftermarket body part, I can remove it and it will still be yellow underneath until I get a custom painted replacement onto the car. HTH,
