Owner of an 85

I now own an 85 rx7. It is a base model everything is in good shape considering year minus engine. Its got a water seal leak so it starts hard. I got the whole deal for 250 bucks. IT has a racing beat exsaust manifold, racing beat cat back, lowering springs, front strut tower brace, and turbo 2 seats, and the Transmission is nearly new, it syncros so nice that it slides right in gear. I am not licensing it and am going to take a year to do the body and repaint, fix all the little issues, and hopefully put a 13b in or just a streetported freshly rebuilt 12a. (Would keep 12a simply because transmission is in such good shape)

I did notice that it has rear disk, does that mean by chance that it has a limited slip?

Disc brakes only came with lsd, but you might test it to make sure. With the other mods already done, I wouldn't suprise meif it's lsd.

yea its pretty killer deal I thought. The main reason its so cheap is because it is a friend, and the engine obviously does need to be rebuilt which isnt cheap. oh some more stuff it has is a cd player, and newer radiator. The thing im trying to figure out are what springs are on the car. They are tightly wound around the strut but dont seem to be very stiff but for sure low. The interior is painted black but it was originally maroon. I dont like the fact that it is painted but I will just repaint it again to clear up the thin parts of the interior paint. The seats are maroon I like the seats to much to part so I will try and find a way to either replace the cover with black, dye them, or just but some seat covers on.

Im not going to lie my knowledge of rotary is based completly on reading the last month and my friend who has had 6. lol so I have lots to learn.

I will post pictures tmw. Im really happy with the deal and there is onl one corner of body damage and its nothing I cant fix in a day. its getting paint before thanksgiving. Im keeping it black so I dont have to worry about the door james.

Oh ya, welcome to the forum. You should paint it formula white. It's my favorite color. Here's a pic of my 83 GSL. https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...hmentid=180713

that white is pretty sharp. My friends dad works for ppg so Im getting paint from them, they have a garage dedicated to painting so it should turn out well. Im goin black, but its going to be more like a pearly black.

I have to agree with twinkletoes white does look nice on a first gen, but Desert Brown is still by far the best! J/K

Years ago I parked beside a 84 or 85 that was painted in a really nice pearl white. Just the way the pinks and purples in the paint looked when the sun hit was enough to make you drool. The car was perfect in every way. It had the Mazda accessory ducktail spoiler and front air dam and the sweet 16" rims (BBS's I think), an RB exhaust, tinted windows (not too dark but not too light), brown interior and glass roof panel. It was probably the nicest FB I've ever seen, I wish I had a pic of it.

But my point was, before I took off down memory lane was that I find that light colours always show off the lines of a car so much better then black, plus a light colour always looks awsome, hides EVERYTHING!

But I am a sucker for black to...

Oh ya welcome to the club! And trochoid is a wealth of knowledge, he is a good guy to know. Can wait to see pics, before during and after!

Definitely sounds like a really great deal. I would like to see pics like the rest of us. Almost all of our cars can use quite a bit of updating, whether it be paint, engine, or otherwise. Great news is that you got the best version of all rx7's. haha. Alright, with opinions held aside for a second, snap some pics of the car, and make sure to check under the storage bins and wheel wells for rust.

Thats a great deal for a GSL, even if it needs a rebuild....

Personally, Id stick with the 12A, and street port it, then blow-through turbo it. (Im kind of hell bent on blow-through turbo 12As, but there are other options) Also, since its needs rebuilt, take the time to clean and paint the engine compartment while you have the motor out.

Black is a great color, (but a bitch to maintain, I have a black car now) you might also want to consider eliminating the side moldings, FBs look really sharp with them removed. Paint and a set of BBS style wheels with a nice lip will really set the cars' appearance IMO.

Congratulations on your new seven, enjoy it!!

I really would like to turbo the 12a after rebuild cause the transmission is just perfect. It shifts so firmly, and for sure has an LSD. I tested it a few times and it just launches really hard. I dont want that transmission to go to waste.

Ok so after getting time to really get down and dirty with the car I started by pulling out all the carpet. From the interior it is pretty clean, there is however a small rust hole in the wheel well. I am going to fix this tmw hopefully, with fiberglass. I know thats not the best way to do it but about the only way I really can. With the interior the Seats foward is going to be a full interior, which is mind I might add. and behind the seats is going to be stripped and painted black, perhaps with truck bed liner. to give it a strong protection of the interior.

Welcome to the forum. Everything you will ever need to know about these cars, you will be able to find here. I like that fact that you've already spent a month reading up on them. And yes, you got a killer deal! I wish I had friends like that (maybe I should be nicer?)....

I absolutly love the sound of the car. The engine also might not be as bad off as thought. It needs to be cleaned up a little so I can tell where its leaking and if it is. It had a hard time starting but the second I put new spark plugs in it, it turned right over. It also was blowing white smoke out hardcore (it hadnt been ran for 2 months and has a bad coolant seal) But I drove it really high up in the rpms and stuff to see what it was capable of. But I got home filled the coolant all the way up. And started it and let it run several times. and no more smoke, and the coolant level hasnt gone down at all over the 3 days it had the coolant toped off with lots of idle and startups and hard driving.
