you can start but not running your car untill you fix the problem! im not too familiar with the beehives, but i think it might be a heater hose or seomthing. if it is a heater hose then you can go to mazdatrix.com and order one or you can try at your local auto parts store and while you at it if any of your other hoses that havent been changed in 20 some years change those too. i think that the heater hoses are supject to breaking and leaking bc the beehive leaks over time and when it leaks, it leaks all over the heater hoses, someonoe correct me if im wrong on any of this

edit: how high did the temp needle get when you shut it off and how high have you been letting it get?

when you saw it starting to raise above the half way point you should have turned it off but we learnt from our mistakes, the reason i say that is bc overheating is the one on killer of the rotary. you have a few options. well after you fix the leak you do.
1. you try to use the blockweld trick
2. you can rebuild it your self, but you might have a warped housing.
3. you can get ahold www.mazdarecycling.com are somewheres about 1300 1400 for a rebuild but the use all new seals from the mazda and if your core is fucked the dont charge you for anything that is fucked on it. they also have a 12 month unlimited warrenty
4 you can go to a salvage yard and pick an engine from them but theres no way to know if its any good or not but you could use the 2 engines to make a good one
5. you can get an eng from someone from here on the forum

Start with the usual cooling system checks. Does the fan work, new Mazda oem thermostat, is the radiator clean, is the water pump working, are the belts tight, is the radiator cap sealing, etc,? These are all basic to any water cooled combustion engine and not rotary specific.

For the rotary part, is there sweet smelling smoke coming out of the exhaust, is there coolant on the plugs when you pull them, check the oil, does it look like a chocolate milkshake?
