OK, Teeth pulling time!
You cannot clean a thermostat and open it by hand to verify that it is working. You have to put it in boiling water and verify that it is opening.
So you are saying that you are overheating at idle? Where is the needle on the temperature gauge?
Have you owned this car for a while or did you just get it. If you have had it for a while how long has the issue been there?
Have you driven it on the street and if so does it overheat then?

Is the coolant fresh or is it what was in there when you bought the car?
Did you properly bleed the coolant?
Is your fan engaging?
Any damage to the front mount oil cooler? The cooling system relies heavily on the oil temperature as well, so any problems with that can contribute to high coolant temps.

Coolant light coming on just is for the low level sender in the top of the radiator and is either bad or the level is dropping below the sensor end.
Again,
Did the engine overheat while you are driving it on the street?
When did the over heating issue begin.
Have you put the thermostat in boiling water to see if it opens or not?
Spin the fan blade and see if their is any resistance when you spin it after engine is warm.

Take more than 30 seconds to post your responses, actually give them a little thought. We are trying to diagnose a problem with a car that we cannot see in person, and can only do so by asking questions of you. If you cannot answer those questions for us, then we cannot help you. Put a little effort into this, and so will we.
Good luck, and I look forward to seeing your more informative posts soon.
