Opinions/thoughts on this staggered wheel/tire issue.

Ive been neglecting the board these past years, but that isnt to say Ive been neglecting my FB. It is currently down for a V-mount intercooler setup and some suspension bushing/steering overhaul work.

anyways, the car is in some SERIOUS need of good wheels and rubber. I have been running the stock SE wheels and dry rotted tires that came with the SE parts car I bought for the suspension.

300+ hp and old 195 coopers is a crazy mix.

so here's the plan for the new wheels.

Front:
XXR 962, 17x7 +38 4x4.5
Toyo T1R 205/40R17

Rear:
XXR 962 17x9 +35
Toyo T1R 245/40R17

From my measurements, this should fit (although kind of tight on the rear, but thats what I'm looking for). This isnt my first oversized staggered setup that I have done. I have XXR's on my X-runner and their offset specs are right on. I run a 20x8.5 and 20x10 XXR 006 with 275/40 and 315/35 respectively. They are huge compared to the factory setup and fit perfect.

Just looking for some thoughts and opinions, mainly on the rear, I'm 95% sure the fronts will fit fine.

I have ran 205/40R17s in the front and 215/40r17s in the rear. I was running 17x7s front and rear. I had slight rubbing issues in the rear with the fender lip. When I was still running my blowthrough 12A pushing 250 rwhp, I would blow the tires off. I down sized on the rims so I could run some tires with a little more sidewall. Way better traction.

there is nothing wrong with staggered rims. In my RX-3's, one has SSRs 16x7.5 in front and 16x8 in rear. The other is 15x7.5 and 15x8 (soon to be 15x8 front and 15x9 or 15x9.5 in rear)

My friend has those wheels on his 240sx. They were heavy as hell and I believe he was running the same sized tires as you. His stockish SR20DET would make them spin...

i dunno about 17's, but i'm running 225/45/15's all the way around, i could do 245 rear i think, but it would be TIGHT

i just looked at yours, in the front its a little taller, and its 205 vs 225, so i win.

rear; that's a good fit, i think it might be about as big as is possible, good job

If I may offer a tire suggestion: Bridgestone Potenza RE11. Replacement for the Pole Position S02. It has ranked highest in TireRack's comparisons of Extreme Performance Tires. That, and people in the Wheels/Tires/Suspension section have said that the T1R is junk.

sorry, had a typo on the rear size/

245/35R17, not 40 series

there are few tires that are available in both sizes, and dont cost a fortune. I have Toyo Proxies S/T on setup I mentioned before on my truck, and they are great.

I'm running 225/50-15 (street) and 225/45-15 (race) in the rear. My wheels are 7 X 15 with a 35mm offset. I had to roll the rear lips to keep them from rubbing. If you can fit 245/35 rubber on the rear on 9" wide wheels, you're gonna need some vaseline .

did you physically measure the offset of your wheels and confirm the factory specs? Because I have seen them off by 5mm or more. Like I was saying, XXR wheels seam to be spot on on there measurements, and their measurements on my truck wheels were spot on.

I'm not looking to tuck the wheel or anything, but its gonna be a squeeze, I know that.

some pix to feed the masses, not related to the wheels

Do not buy XXR wheels. They are heavy, hard to balance and the finish comes off. A guy on my street put some on last spring and over the winter, they rusted. I do not know how aluminum wheels rust but they did. He called up the company and they would not help him at all so he is trashing them.

I would go with something lighter and an actual performance wheel.

I was running on a 300 hp setup 5Zigen (Mazdaspeed Spec MX-5 spec wheels) 17x8 rears and 17x7 fronts with 225/45/40 and 215/45/15 Toyos. Tunning the stock tires would have been totally useless. These worked well with a spacer in the front and slightly rolled fenders.

No -- I didn't measure the offset, but I did check the inboard gap (wheel well to tire) and outboard gap (tire to fender lip), and they were about equal, which is what I was looking for.

I too had the finish come off one of my wheels, but the factory warrantied it with no hassel at all. They are definately not BBW or Gram lights or anything like that, but the sizes are right, the look is right and the price is right. I dont know about the weight thing. On my X-runner. A 20x10 XXR006 and 315/35r20 weighted the about the same as the factory 18x8.5 and 255/45R18 setup; 60lbs.

Well, you can save yourself some money and pick up my new 5Zigens for cheap. I decided to go with a widebody and my wheels and tires that I bought last fall and practicly never used have to go as I am going with a wider rim setup and the 5-lug BBK conversion. Just throwing that out there as I need these gone.
