What's Up,

I just purchased an 85' RX-7. It's red, and needs a lot of work. Only paid $480 for it :-)

Right now, It's almost impossible to get the car moving if it's in first idleing. I really need to boost the gas everytime I let go of the clutch in first. The Clutch is very flacky as well as the gas pedal, and it died on me about 10 times on the attempt on the way home.

Tried to jump the car, worked for a little while longer, but the pops couldn't get it going either. So I had to tow the car to my driveway, now it sits :-(

But Hey! I'm glad I own an RX-7 now, there's so many things I wanna do to it. I saw this site and thought it would be perfect to join.

I would ask some questions about my situation, but I'll probably do that on another post to save the frustation of reading a member intro post, haha :-D

Feels good being here, write some mo' later :-)

Welcome to the forum! Good luck with your 7, seems to me you're having some carb, fuel pump problems. Hope your car isn't too badly beat up. Glad to have you join the team

first off try doing a tune up, change your spark plugs, plug wires, distributor rotor, distributor cap, fuel filter, air filter, oil, coolant, tranny fluid, rear end fluid, then adjust your timing and air fuel mixture fiddle around with your timing, use a timing light... Oh ya and get a haynes manual it will be your best friend also feel free to search this site its got all the information you could imagine and then some... Well come to the club and good luck with getting your car back on the road!

Cool, Thanks guys. This should help me a lot. I've been doing some parts research and came across a lot of stuff that I can use to upgrade my rx-7. I will definately consider getting the manual, that will come in handy. I hope it's nothing too serious, because it did run when it came off the lot :-)

Thanks again, will write soon.

Hey dude,

Welcome to the forum. Check the FAQ, there's a thread there that deals with a "sitting" car, it is also very useful for starting a restoration project because alot of the things are similar... it lists things like changing filters and plugs/plugwires... Check it out

There's a search function at the top... it doesn't always work the best, but if you go to "advanced search" and limit it to the 1st gen section, it helps. Give it a try before posting, it helps give you a base from which to ask specific questions, and even answers questions sometimes. The FAQ and the Archive have some good stuff too.

The Heynes manual is the best $20 you'll ever spend on your car

If you have any questions, post Welcome to the forum.

Jon

Sounds to me like you might be missing your leading ignition. Check your lower spark plugs to see if they are actually sparking. Easy to check, easy to fix. Check it out and post back when you have time. Oh, and welcome paradise dude!

WELCOME! So you have a few problems to solve but so what, you have a classic in it’s time. Don’t get much sweeter.
BTW: that sounded like an orgasm to me. Yeah, now we’re talkin!

FYI: I'm a chick.

Yeah it is pretty sweet. I just can't wait til I can get it back on the road! Right now I'm still trying to figure out if it's a GSL-SE or not, but I think it's a non GSL-SE because it doesn't have a sunroof.

I'll do some replacing with the parts like the ignition system with new coils and spark plugs / plugs wires, changing the oil, adding some ZMax so I can clean out the motor and the gas tank, probably put some 93 octane in there too. Anything Fluid like I'll replace, because it looks like this car has been sitting at that dealership for some time.

Til then I'll post and let ya all know when this thing is back on the streets. :-)

if it's a GSL-SE it will have a fuel injected 13B if it's a non it will have a carbureted 12A. If it's a GSL or GSL-SE it will also have rear disc brakes.

Looked under the hood some more and saw right on the motor that it is a 12A, so I guess it is carbureted. That's kind of oldskool ain't it? All cars now are fuel-injected, right? Well I can still replace that part still, I'd prefer fuel-injected just because of only what I've heard of in the past.

Some of the best advice that you could be given would be don't go buying all kinds of upgrades at first...check everything over...the usual plugs, wires, clean and or replace the carb if needed, purge all the lines and use all new liquids all the way around, then once you decide what you need buy it but always shop around. As per the body the major thing that needs fixing would be the rear wheel wells, those rust like a mother. Then just work your way up. Don't buy big at first, and expect to put quite afew dollars into her. And fix it like you'll have it forever...other than that your best friend is the search at the top of the page...if you can't find it post it up...oh ya welcome to the forum you will never regret the day you purchased a 7...unless some jackass backs into your 7 in the parking lot...that seems to happen alot! lol

That sounds alright. There's been some upgrades and replacement parts that I've been glueing my eyes to. But first I really need to get the manual, because I don't how to and don't know where everything is under the hood unless I recognize it like the oil filter, and even that looks a little funny, lol.

Probably once I get the manual, things will be more clearer, like the carbureter and stuff. If I have to, that rx7.com shop is not too far away from me, and they can replace or install stuff for me if I have to, otherwise I'm gonna see if I can do it myself.

Thanks for the tip, this way I can save some money.

i live in plano and ive had 3 7's including a 12a and if you need any helpi can try to see what i can do. One peice of advice that i can tell you right now is that rotary performance is not a good place to go to. They do excellent work but charge outrageous prices, almost as bad as mazda. For the first gen they dont do much work at all. Theres a place thats about an hour from plano that is rebuilding my engine and its over 1500$ under what RP would have charged me.

Yeah that's sounds great. I could really use a hand with this car. I gotta wait til I get paid again before I do anything else with the car which would be probably after christmas, but the manual is on its way. As far as testing the spark plugs and stuff goes I don't have the tools to do it.

Talk to my dad a little bit and he said that another problem could be the alternator, which I should replace as well.

That rx7.com place looks alright, I guess you've been there before. I was probably gonna go to them with the 7 to work on my exhaust, clutch and flywheel, and probably the brakes as well because they seem to know all about the rx-7 .. I guess, hehe.

But for that, there's also a kenny's muffler shop about 2 miles from me in hurst. And as far as the other stuff goes like the clutch and brakes .. dunno :-\

Clutches and brakes are at-home projects. As for exhaust, get Racing Beat exhaust systems. www.racingbeat.com Welcome to the forums. Ask for a tool set from sears that has a crapload of metric in it for christmas.

Looks like you've read my mind. I was going to ask for tools this christmas. Sears is the place eh? I better do some of my own christmas shopping to find out the right set.

As far as the brakes and clutches go, I guess I could do it. That would definately save me some money. If the exhaust are all bolt ons then I could probably do that too. I checked out the headers from racing beat and they look sweet. I will probably invest in those as well.

That stuff I would definately need help on, unless the manual makes it look like it's a piece of cake. :-)

The manual is good, but it makes things look easy as hell that really are not.

A perfect example of this is the engine rebuild. They make it look so EASY.

As for your carburetor problem, stick with the carb. Don't fuel inject it. If you have a problem, you can easily fix it yourself (even if we have to help you), whereas fuel injection is having all kinds of computers and all kinds of other crap that I wouldn't want anywhere NEAR my car. If you have any carb questions, especially simple stuff, I'm more than glad to help you. I don't know everything, but I've been through so much crap with my own, I can get you through a lot of stuff.

For the most part, though, stuff is easy to do on this car.

I've found that almost everything can be done with a simple metric tool set. I got my car running from about where yours is (if not worse) with not much more than a $3 set of screwdrivers and a $20 set of wrenches/sockets. Like I said, real easy.

Not many people are online late night. If you want, you can contact me through AIM (barryclipsnbravo) Yahoo! messanger(vivi0032000@yahoo.com) or MSN (jays83@msn.com)

Take your time! Learn to do as much of repairs as you can yourself. It is much cheaper and gives you that fuzzy feeling inside. Most of it isn't as hard as you would think.

Congrats on your 7 and welcome.
