it uses engine oil, a pump meters a precise amount to be injected into the carberator. it mixes with gas and is fed to the engine.
dont run synthetic, it doesnt burn properly and will cause engine carbon buildup and fouled plugs.
if you do a search, about 75% of the forum runs castrol gtx 20-50. As do I and have been pleased with it.
What book are you looking for. There are haynes manuels if your looking for repair.

many people like to run 2 stroke pre-mix oil in your gas tank. 2 stroke oil is designed to lube and burn, so it leaves no carbon, and you don't have to worry about whether or not the Oil Metering Pump is working cause its in the gas. Plus the OMP uses oil that has been cycled through the motor over and over again. To use 2 stroke, add 1/2 quart per full tank, or 1oz per gallon. The original OMP was designed to inject 1 gallon of oil per every 100 gallon of fuel used. There are also kits available that will allow you to use your stock OMP to inject 2 stroke oil.
