ok so i got a 79 the other day
Completely stock.I'm barely old enough to drive legally, but I have lots of driving experience. Ok so now that were past that, my problem. I have VERY little money to do anything with the car, I dont care about body work because the car is in almost mint condition and dont want stupid body kits or anything, thats not me. I do want to know some cheap things to do with the engine though...HELP?
remove the rats nest... that helps. tune it. the carb on the 79 is easy to tune, so that isnt much trouble. u could put in an electric fan (taurus). but i think the stock clutch fan pushes enough air. thats all the cheap and easy i can think of right now...... the search button usually helps.
swap suspension for '83+ year. Suspension parts will be almost non exhistant performance wise not OEM. I have a March of '78 model '79 RX-7 and I put '85 GSL-SE suspension on mine with a 13B and '85 -SE Interior. She looks like a '79 GSL-SE. Real sexy. :-) All for $840.

I'd personally think it'd be far best for you right now to focus on the insurance and gas, and drive it for a bit till you know what you want to do with it and make subtle changes so you won't have very much downtime.

Yea just enjoy the car for what is it right now bro. Too many guys out there trying to make the fastest 1st gen. and either giving up before there done or blowing up what they have dumped tons of $$$$ and then give up. If the car runs good then hop in drive away! No donuts, no looking for someone to race just pure driving enjoyment! Wash and wax, keep her looking good !
With it being a '79, the first item I would say to look into, swapping the dizzy from a 81-85. Gets rid of the points, which are getting harder to find without having to special order, and can be done in a manner that will allow the original dizzy to be re-installed should the value of an all original car ever go thru the roof.
Other than that, just drive it and enjoy it for a while. The ignition swap will actually make it easier to enjoy, due to the lack of having to check/adjust/change points ever so often.

It was blowing like a 200 something, I can't remember been so long but after my little conversion it blew a 2. The mechanic looked all over trying to figure out what I did in 1 week to fix it. Only problem with doing this is, it got way too hot and one day I was smelling something wierd, looked under the car and it was glowing red... so everytime I needed a CA emission I just welded a new universal cat on. Made for lots of fun when the secondaries opened going up a hill... too much gas got down into it and ignited for a jet flame out the back.
Lemoore =/ that's pretty far from me
He probably need to do some general maintenance on the car. I think there is something in the FAQ page about this but I don't remember exactly what it said. Start with checking the ignition plugs, change fluids, change your fuel filter, check your vacuum hoses.
I'm not saying any of that will fix the 6000 rpm think but its good for your car.

Definately do all the general maintinence items and look into getting rid of that grotty points distributor. That was the first mod I did to my '79 when I got it.

I couldn't get mine over 6k either... strangely enough. I converted it to electronic ignition but it didn't help with that problem (helped with tons more though
). Strange thing that I had was every once in a while... something would click and suddenly the motor had no problem going from idle to redline and then less than a minute later the 6k problem came back. That was awhile ago and I'm starting to think maybe either one of the vaccuum solenoids just flat out wasn't working or maybe my carb had issues. I did have the carb rebuilt though to no avail.
