Stock 1984 GSL-SE

As soon as the vehicle is turned on, the gauge raises up to 110 and beyond until it reaches what seems to be the furthest the gauge can reach. I'm assuming at this point it is just a faulty reading, as it runs just fine. Any thoughts on what may be causing this?

 

old age? i'm not familiar with it, is it electronic or mechanical? either way it might just be the sender. which on mine is right below my oil filter. good luck.

unplug it from the sender if it reads 0 the the sender is bad, if it stayes high the wire or guage is bad

 

Buy a new sending unit (looks like a mushroom located directly below the Oil Filter housing). I also have an 84SE and had the 'high oil pressure reading' symptom. Replaced with a BAP unit - they're universal to fit a lot of different cars - and it now reads about 65psi during cold conditions, pretty much all the time.

My other sending unit would read high on cold start (like 110), then drop down when warmed up. Sitting at a light, it used to read about 35-40 and then when you drive, it would jump up to 110 again. Definitely not real world readings.

Installation only takes a few minutes with a rag to clean everything up and a 10mm box-end. One connector (slide on spade) and you're done. Good luck,

 

I disconnected it from the sender, and it still raised to the end just as before. Seems to me it would be the gauge itself. Note that it would never lower while connected or not.
