oil pressure gauge question

First of all id like to say thanks to every one on this form. The engine turned on first try last saturday. Without this forum i dont think my rebuild would have been possible.

Now question is and i searched i just want to make sure before i start buying stuff. When i turn the ignition on the stock oil pressure gauge goes to 100. I unplug the guage and it goes down to zero. Mind you this is all with out turning on the engine. Is the oil pressure switch bad or is there somthin else i am missing. I turned it on for a few mins but i want to ensure that there is oil pressure. Thanks

Are you unplugging the connector from the end of the oil pressure sender on the rear iron? If so, and the gauge returns to zero, you have a bad sender. They are plentiful in used condition, and came in a lot of japanese cars in the 80s (mazda, subaru, mitsu, ect).

Sounds to me like your oil pressure sensor might need replacement or you have a short in the line. Someone here pribably has one, or they are available at Mazdatrix.

You should be able to ground the wire out and get the same indication on the gauge, if I am reading the wiring diagram correctly. (Not sure what year yours is. My diagram is fof the 85')
