Oil Cooler cracks 85 RX7GSLSE
I need advice. Where the oil cooler hoses attach to the oil cooler there are cracks and oil is leaking from the cooler. Should I buy a new cooler from the Ann Arbor Mazda dealer at $600 + tax or is there a cheaper place to buy an oil cooler?
Should I try to find a welder who can repair the cooler?
Does the 85 RX7 GSL SE need the cooler? Can I run it without it?
Is there a good salvage yard that I could buy a used cooler from?
Thanks, Mark

The oil cooler actually provides about 30% of the cooling power for a rotary. It will definately overheat without it. I had the same problem with my 82. I actually ended up cracking 2 coolers by overtightening. The first one I tried to have fixed by welding but was unsuccessful. The second on I just gave up on. I obtained a 2nd gen oil cooler with a 1st gen parts car I bought so I installed that. Stainless steel braided lines and everything. Moral of the story, go with the much more reliable 2nd gen style cooler. It uses banjo bolts on the cooler itself, so you'll have to have custom lines made, but its still cheaper than buying a new one.
